| ZAP not letting me out!!
I'm having a ZAP problem, but it might be more than that since it involves my BEFSR41 router and perhaps XP Home? I wasn't sure where to put this topic, ie Computer Hardware Help, Linksys, Microsoft Help, but finally decided to place it here because it's mainly about Zone Alarm Pro and because you guys are my "peeps."
Word.
I just finished setting up a new rig with a dual Raptor 36.7 (~68 GB total) setup. The thing is lovely.
I have ZAP installed, the latest build I believe (129?), and also have it set in my router to "Enforce Zone Alarm Pro Security."
After a fresh reboot, if I open IE, I get right in, no problems. However, if I go on to another non-internet task, my internet door shuts and I get the Zone Alarm/Linksys screen telling me the two aren't talking to one another. Hmmm.
If I "uncheck" the box within the router, everything's fine and no timeouts. But this has never happened to me before, as I've always had that box checked off within the router.
And I've also tried reinstalling ZAP again, but that did not solve the problem.
I'm wondering if there's some time of setting that I might have overlooked? Has anyone heard of anything like this? -- "I'm going where the climate suits my clothes . . ." -- The Grateful Dead |

| Remove the linksys option for zone alarms. Never seen that done before but its getting in the way. They should work independently. Set both your ZAP fireall settings for WAN and LAN, internet and trusted, to medium. -- Steve Martin: " If I only had one wish, it would be---> That all Linux users forget their root password!! " |

| Thanks Anav for the fast response. Like I've said, I've had this interference before between the two. I like the option of having this on. And it makes for an interesting new problem to solve, but you're right, if it comes to it, I'll uncheck the ZAP Security option in the router. -- "I'm going where the climate suits my clothes . . ." -- The Grateful Dead |

| My advice is to email ZoneLabs and ask them what is the story. I would only invoke linksys setting for something that is not of their making especially on the security side with the blessing of the originator ie Zonelabs,,,, in which case they should have some supporting literature and hopefully not a disclaimer.......use at own risk LOL -- Steve Martin: " If I only had one wish, it would be---> That all Linux users forget their root password!! | I hear you, it's a valid point, and I will write to them. I love trying to solve puzzles like these ... Oh, here we go, another nostalgic trip to the "marked threads" area, yee-haw!!!
»E-mail Digital ID
»Outlook 2002 Sign/Encrypt buttons for toolbar
»Help! Hardware Firewall & PC Security??
»Well, I've been compromised.
Puzzles are neat!
Why has this always worked in the past, but not now? The newest build of ZAP the culprit? A setting within ZAP overlooked or set improperly?
Hopefully the Zone Alarm folks at Zonelabs will know .. I will write them if I stump the masses here. Thanks again Anav for your feedback. -- "I'm going where the climate suits my clothes . . ." -- The Grateful Dead |

| reply to Garbs This thread has a lot of great info, but unfortunately, I couldn't come up with anything further myself to help solve my problem.
»ZA w/Linksys
I've been aware of this function between these two products for some time now, and things have been great. It's just now on a new motherboard (Asus P4C800-E Deluxe), using the onboard LAN, I'm running into new problems.
Perhaps this is a motherboard issue? I've got the latest BIOS installed for it ... ??? I'm lost. -- "I'm going where the climate suits my clothes . . ." -- The Grateful Dead |

| Kewlies, I just got a new puter with motherboard ASUS P4P -800 Deluxe..... kicks ass, ZAP works fine No linksys in da equation!!
7. I own a copy of ZoneAlarm Pro already. Can I put that license key into the router administration panel and use it for all of my PC's?
No, if you own a copy of ZoneAlarm Pro, it is a single user license. You must have a license key that is "valid" for the router and supports multiple users. -- Steve Martin: " If I only had one wish, it would be---> That all Linux users forget their root password!! " |

| reply to Garbs One more thing I'd like to add.
I think I forgot to turn off the XP Firewall for my LAN connection. Usually, I have this disabled in XP, but when I'm setting up a new system, I leave it on until I get ZAP on there, but this time I think it's still turned on (and I'm at work right now and can't confirm this).
Would this be causing any trouble?
And from that thread linked above, I need to double-check this suggestion by said by WLiley : "... [make sure that the setting in ZAP is set to] 'this pc is a client of an ICS/NAT gateway' and specify your gateway (the linky) address - probably 192.168.1.1"

Aah,
I purchased ZAP about 8 months ago, and I've been able to download upgrades and install them each time no problems. They've always played nice with my router.
I thought I had a cooperative "router" version already? -- "I'm going where the climate suits my clothes . . ." -- The Grateful Dead |

| reply to Garbs I personally haven't used ZA much, but if you have a Linksys router, why do you still want a software firewall?
Though if you still want one, then I personally would suggest maybe trying another one, or try disabling it to begin with to see if there's a difference. -- Why I hate VIA |

ZAPro and Linksys are totally compatible and should work. You need a software firewall with the router. -- *Team Z* Member **PCQ&A Forum** |

Did you poke around the Linksys site? Does ZAPro work OK with a direct connection to your internet connection? That is, did you bypass the router? -- *Team Z* Member **PCQ&A Forum** |

| Thanks C0de, but yea, they're designed to work together, in perfect harmony, that's what's so nuts about this. Appreciate the feedback though.

Yes, the ZA works with and without the router, granted I enter the internet right after booting up and stay there. In each case, whether using the "Security Enforcement" in the router or not, after I walk away for 5 mins or so and come back, the internet connection is blocked.
It's like it's timing out, something, some "service" maybe? is closing some door between ZAP and the router. Truly odd. -- "I'm going where the climate suits my clothes . . ." -- The Grateful Dead |

| reply to Garbs Garbs, It sounds like you need to give "something" permission in ZA. Try turning off the ZAPro only features -- all of the privacy features. Also, I suggest that you force yourself to read the ZAPro help files, you might find the answer lurking around in them. -- *Team Z* Member **PCQ&A Forum** |

| reply to Garbs Thanks everyone. I'm going to try tonight to turn off the XP integrated firewall because that's always been off in the past, and I'm going to triple-check my settings in ZAP. I'll post them back here later this evening. Thanks again. -- "I'm going where the climate suits my clothes . . ." -- The Grateful Dead |

| reply to C0deZer0 Hmm the moderator hacked my initial response there Codezero but I am sure you remember. Luckily I am not banned so can apologize if I was a tad harsh....... funny how a system message is faceless....I was looking for a good debate.
I would like to say OOPS and sorry as I thought you had a router.... and hopefully you have, despite my inappropriate tone, learned something positive about SW firewalls and routers.....
I admit my judgment is clouded of late, regarding advice on basic security, no trivial matter, having fixed a friends computer with no firewall or antivirus on board!!
The salient points were a. the SW firewall can stop unauthorized programs from getting through open doors/ports in a router b. the SW firewall can stop authorized programs from reaching the WAN and any subsequent returns from the WAN (incoming) based on that outgoing c. the SW firewall can also show what functionality a program is trying to utilize while connecting to the net, ie as a server, a straight connection or using another application to access the net..
Let me hypothetically repost said by codezero: I have heard that SW firewalls are not required if one has a router since the router has a firewall. I am thus a bit confused as to why the poster is attempting to load a SW firewall with his router?? PS I am thinking of buying a router too!
said by Anav: Hey CodeZero, someone fed you duffgen, a SW firewall is security filter that is 'application' specific whereas routers and routers with firewalls (two different beasts as as a router simply has NAT - another discussion altogether) deal with packet types, ports and IP addresses etc. Furthermore, routers and routers with firewall usually come defaulted with rather loose outgoing traffic screening. I have a firewall router and still have ZA loaded. It helps me detect spyware attempting to reach the internet and I use it to distinguish, for example, when MSN messenger is connecting to the net as a server or as a straightforward connection. If I ever do any testing bypassing the router, either direct to the cable modem, or via dialup, I am always protected.....
