| Supra Raising Rates for DSL Customers
Supra is adding $20 more to your bill if you are a DSL subscriber starting October 15th. It looks like no local provider will touch your line if you have DSL.
Bellsouth is giving $125 if you switch back. First he said $100 then he said $125 if I switched right then. Reminded me of a car salesman. -- I tried to contain myself but then I escaped. |

@216.3.x.x | Yep. Got my letter today also...
Don't know what to do. I can't forsee myself paying close to $70 a month for DSL.
I sure as hell not switching back to bellsouth. I'd would rather... (gasp) go back to dialup. |

| reply to LMari How about contacting the Florida Public Service Commission. I called them Friday and they were unaware of this "DSL Surcharge" I sent them the letter and they said they would investigate. It wouldn't hurt if they heard from a few more customers. Their number is 1-800-342-3552. I can not believe Supra did not even give us 30 days notice. This is not a good sign.
The Supra DSL inquiries we received last month were obviously bogus. They clearly have no intention of offering DSL to its customers. Can't wait to try their 5x dialup! |

| Well they must have known this, and they undertook the service, I question their right to pull it out from under us without sufficient notice or approval from the PSC?
As a side note, I wonder if DSLi would be interested in taking over our lines since they also provide our DSL? And I would just die to go back to MA HELL!

| reply to deals4me You might want to google on "Supra Bellsouth Florida PSC DSL"
There is a rather long and bitter history with many lawsuits going back many years, some of which have reached the Florida Supreme Court.
I think the consensus is that Supra can resell Bellsouth lines and place DSL on them, but they can't do that on the cheaper UNE-P lines. They have to buy the 1FB line for more money.
Now if your question is why Supra is unwilling to absorb this additional cost themselves and not pass it on to you, that would be between you and Supra. The PSC wouldn't be involved with that. |

| It seems to me that the issue for the PSC are two fold:
1) Do BS charges constitute something illegal. As Supra has now advised us, BS charges Supra more for a line that someone else provides DSL on and then charges the "someone else" for the DSL portion of the line. According to supra $20 more for the line and from previous experience with Rapid Systems the DSL providers charge for use of the same line is somewhere around $30+ for a basic total of $50+. But when BS provides DSL service on their own line for $35-45, their charges for DSL to the customer are less than the wholesale pricing of the parts not including the cost of the DSL service. That means they are providing it for free or even losing money themselves. It should not take a brain surgeon to figure out that this constitutes unfair predatory pricing.
2) When a company like Supra decides to provide service to customers where they knowingly loose money for years to lure customers to their service, can they suddenly and without adequate notice "surcharge" the customer or is PSC permission required? |

| reply to LMari I'm sure you guys can get good deals on those analog lines. Shouldn't be too hard for DSLi to port the numbers over to them so then you'd keep your line, your number but have DSLi instead of bell. -- It's true, I have bought a 17" powerbook! |

| reply to aquifer WARNING: I've heard that if you have an ADSL line with Bellsouth.net or DSLi for that matter, the moment you switch your local service with another provider, say MCI, Bellsouth will drop the ADSL on that circuit immediately. Apparently they can only offer ADSL as long as the loop belongs to them. -- "Are you the police?... No ma'am, we're sysadmins" |

If it has DSL on it, then it should be a 1FB, as I believe UNE-P does not support ADSL.

Correct, a UNE-P cannot support ADSL, it must be upgraded to a 1FR (One Flat Rate Residential) or 1FB (One Flat Rate Business). -- "Are you the police?... No ma'am, we're sysadmins" [text was edited by author 2003-09-24 22:13:14] |
