cable outage in brooklyn?

i'm in downtown brooklyn 11238 zip

anyway, lately my net connection has been
good for like 5, 10 minutes then goes down inexplicably
and stay down for past few days already

called tw, they told me the 4month old toshiba pcx1100
that they supplied me is probably defective and suggest
i go get a new cable modem

so off i went to circuit city, got the new motorola
surboard 5400 series.....lo and behold same friggin result!!
'cannot retrieve dhcp blah blah blah from service provider' after the (ipconfig /release all ipconfig /renew) commands
(don't TW need the MAC address of the new cable modem
for it to work?))

anyway how to i convince TW it's them not me....
and what should i say to have them 'ping' my connection
/send a tech over etc

oh yea what is earthlink support's involvement in this?
who's gonna get bill for any house call?

sorry for the rambling, but posting this from work
thanks in advance for any advice

umm Time Warner Cable was supposed to give you a new modem, not make you go buy a new one.

If Earthlink is your provider then you should of called Earthlink but if Road Runner is your provider then they should of provided you with a new modem and this goes into the Road Runner forum.

First of all return that modem to wherever you bought it from. Call up Time Warner (718-358-0900) and get ahold of Tech support. Tell them your going to bring in your modem for an exchange. Get the address for a local payment center closest to you and take your modem there and exchange it. When you get home with your new modem call Time Warner again and let them take down the MAC Address of the new modem.

I just got my cable and it doesn't work. I have the pcx1100 and I've read some other posts about it being problematic in ny, can I call them and just ask for a newer model or do I have to wait a week for tech to come out?

Well first off you should of started a new thread instead of digging up a 3 month old thread, Ok Now for your problem, What seems to be the matter? If your cable light solid green?
