| Payphones and antiques
Well we all know that payphones are a very old technology and the Bells are starting to take out the payphones because everyone now has a cell phone so why use a payphone? Wi-Fi sounds like a good idea though. Most of those payphones are like antiques and nice for decorations. |

| You see, there are the people that arn't old enough to pay the cell phone bill (me) and can't afford a cell phone (me) and find it easier to take a quarter around with you then a cell phone (me) and need cheap phones without contrats to even think about getting a phone (me).
Now I have to admit yesterday i fell in to the trap and picked up a Cell Phone (however with no contract and at $50) -- Visit ihaterogers.ca Yes, I CanChat. Can you chat? Why not try for yourself? |

payphones are 50 cents right now. I know 50 cents is nothing, but that is twice the price as it was before. |

Three reasons...
1. Lots of people still don't have cell phones. I don't have one because I HATE them and their annoying ring tones, the ability to ruin a perfectly good play, concert or opera. their tendency to make people talk so loud that everyone in the restaurant now knows who they slept with, their ability to make American cell phone owner a worse driver than a near sighted epileptic three year old who can not see abovet the steering wheel... (no offense to near sighted people or those with epilepsy) I once had a cellphone and its good for calling out, but I hate get called, especially on the road.
2. Payphones are far better in emergencies than cellphones. Pinpointing the location of a payphone is pretty much guaranteed whereas pinpointing cellphone location is hit or miss at times.
And 3. Land lines and wired communications are infinitely better than wireless in stability, reliability and security (although no a concern with a payphone).
Eventually the lack of payphones is going to play a part in the death of someone who doesn't have a cellphone, if it already hasn't happened. -- Male by birth... Geek by choice. -- Proudly free of MSO IP network madness! |

Yea, if i can find a "Working" phone, LA is the worst area to use a payphone...not to mention a bigger change of getting mugged -- "Demons wait in every corner, reach for you with poisened claws, Madness spreads its wings above, you're lying helpless on the floor" |

| reply to corster That means it's even cheaper.
I guess when prices first went up (in the U.S. to 35 cents), they discovered the dime wasn't as common as they thought, so they decided that making it 50 cents would be easier for us, plus they would make even more money. |
