Just noticed today that Vonage updated its coming soon to include Vermont. Now if only some VoIP provider would give coverage to Iowa I would be happy. Iowa seems to be a blackhole for VoIP, no provider has coverage. |

I'm not holding my breath. I have in-laws in Iowa so it would be great if anybody had service there, but it's been pointed out neither Focal nor XO does business in Iowa for some inexplicable reason. |

Nah, I don't. If I hold MY breath I'm afraid I'll die. You'd probably just turn purple, albeit a dark shade of purple. |

| reply to Hilbe Where my excitement is right now is the possibility that Vonage will release the username and password for their new softcilent.
This will be enough for me to go back, from what I hear they will be setting the session on MAC address, setting up the possibility for unlimited long distance from my Asterisk box, with no ata in the middle, this will get me back to them, local number or not!
Then I can wait until the end of the year for my local number in Omaha. |

@209.234.x.x | haha if they actually let you do unlimited long distance from an asterisk box, i could technically run my own service using their free minutes -- they're going to put themselves out of business. |

"proprietary softphone" meaning they have their own software you have to install and use... you won't be able to connect just ANYTHING like you can with voiecpulse's Connect! service |

If they allow only one call at a time, from 1 MAC address there is no reason they could not do this. |

| reply to objective One interesting aspect of this is that when they get the softphone running, it's just another piece of evidence that they are handling data, not providing traditional "telephone service" (so take that, Minnesota PUC). It may turn out to be more valuable for that purpose than for anything else.
By the way, it seems Vonage has asked the FCC to preempt the Minnesota PUC order, on the grounds that Vonage is a provider of information services, and not a telecommunications carrier or common carrier. The actual petition, plus the exhibits that go with it, can be found at these three URL's (note the .pdf extension):
»www.netsuds.com/tps/petition.pdf »www.netsuds.com/tps/Exhibits1&2.pdf »www.netsuds.com/tps/Exhibits3&4.pdf
(You should be able to right click on the above links to save the documents to your hard drive, if you want to read them offline). I found these links off of a page advertising a "Telecom Policy Summit & Reception" in Minnesota, and at this point I don't remember who or what directed me to that page in the first place.
Whatever the FCC decides with respect to this case may well set a precedent that will also be applied to other VoIP companies. I had heard somewhere that a comment period has started, but can't find any mention of it on the FCC web site (not that you can easily find much of anything on the FCC site). I would guess that someone else here probably knows more about this than I do. |
