Re: MSN broadband no longer available in my area??

No offense intended here but this makes me wonder. If it was not ethical, why did you sign it or otherwise agree to it to begin with? If you did sign, or or in some other fashion agree to the terms, then I have no doubt that it is legal and binding. IMO ethical and legal are often not synonymous.

I was informed that I will not be able to get out of my contract without paying a percentage of the balance due. I do work in the legal field and I don't think this is eithical or legal.

I know nothing of law, but I would think that if they are allowed to break contract with you early without penalty, then you should be allowed to break contract with them without penalty.

Thanks for the info! I think im just going to get Comcast high speed, they have no contracts and I have read on some other boards that in the Atlanta area they are running at download speeds of 3mbs. I was only stuck with msn because i had a 3 year contract with them and it expires sometime in oct i wonder if they will let me out of it early??

Call up Bell South and find out. Most likely, their DSL service won't be blocking ports at their end -- and nor does MSN for that matter.

IT'S ALL IN THE MODEM !!!!

If you have a DSL 1000, reflash it.
If you have a different modem, you could buy something different.

IT'S ALL IN THE MODEM !!!!

Your letter is probably the result of MSN's move to get back to their primary focus, the software they provide. MSN is getting out of the DSL racket. Last I spoke with them on the phone, they claimed that they are not an ISP and never have been. I don't know how they can claim this since they are my "Internet Service Provider." The whole situation is confusing, but that's what they claim.

There are MANY, MANY, MANY choices you have for broadband service in the 30067 zip code area. I assume you are in 66 or 67. Read some of the reviews on this site about the different ISPs available to you. One said that they had to wait 59 days to get the DSL online at the DSLAM with BellSouth. If that is the case, I'd order now if you are going to be ordering from them. With MSN DSL, you can cancel an account without notice. So if they are ending your service, then go ahead and shop around and order new service. The day it is turned on, call MSN and cancel. You will not pay for service with MSN a day beyond your cancel call.

I did a prequalification for DSL on the Hyatt Regency Suites on Windy Hill Rd. through »www.dslextreme.com/dsl/ and they say it is available at that location at that phone number. It may be available for you, too. If you were to prepay for a year, they will offer a static IP for $40 a month, including a modem. I couldn't tell what modem they offer.
