Dedicated Line vs. Lineshare... should I switch

I've got 1.5/128 right now with Speakeasy, the older, dedicated line version. I'm thinking about upgrading to the 1.5/256 or 1.5/768 but I'm wondering if the line sharing aspect of it is going to impact the quality of my line...

First, I was reading in some other posts about installing a NID-splitter outside the house. Is this something I would do, or would Covad/Verizon do it? Where do you buy them?

It's a fairly new house, so we've got 5 pairs coming into the house - 3 are used for voice, and a 4th is used for our current DSL. How do they choose which of the voice lines to use? Also, the main voice line has several extensions - the wires were installed in series (didn't want it that way but they didn't listen) - will that affect the quality of the line if a splitter is used on the outside?

TIA, Linda

In theory switching to lineshare isn't going to affect the quality of the line at all. Do you know how far from the CO you are? The big difference will be in the line they install in on is poor, then it will affect the quality...

A NID splitter is not required, but it makes things a lot easier. I bought one off E-Bay for $20, so they are not too expensive. They are quite simple to install as well, and eliminate any "wiring" problems inside the house from affecting the DSL signal. You can probably get Covad to install one, but it would be expensive ($200 for the truck roll, plus equipment). It's much cheaper to do it yourself, and simple. If you have any problems installing one...just ask.

They will install the DSL on whatever number you tell them to. It may be possible to ask them to test each line, and run it on the cleanest...but I'm not sure. That would be best asked in the Covad forum, since they do the actual line part.

Linda,

I'm going through similar thought process. You can read here »Unbundled loop upgrade

Installing a NID splitter is the most straightforward solution I believe because you can connect the "dedicated" line in your house to the splitter and you are done. No need to put filters on each phone or worry about the quality of your other phone wiring.

You can install NID splitter yourself. Well, it's legal for you to do it anyhow. You must judge your skills. In my post above I give a link to some very good instructions.

I'll keep the other thread up to date on my progress. My NID splitter is on a truck between here and Texas. Once I have it in hand I will start the transition process.

You choose which phone line to attach the lineshare DSL. Just remember they are tied together. If you want to cancel the phone line you will also have to cancel the DSL (and move to another phone line if you wish). I also have multiple voice lines and I plan to attach DSL to the main line so I can cancel the second line if I want. You know, when DSL becomes so reliable that I don't need dialup backup any more .
