BellSouth Westell "210030" on other ISP

I got what I thought was a good deal on ebay when I got a Westell 2100 (part# A90-210030-04) for a good price... But now I have come to find that this part number seems always to be associated with BellSouth and their PPPoE system.

I'm using DSL from Sonic.net, but it's over PacBell's (SBC's) lines. I'm not sure which company operates the modem at the other end. Not BellSouth though.

Although I have set my vpi/vci correctly, and set the thing to Ethernet Bridge instead of PPPoE, and although the lights all stay green like they're supposed to, it will not allow any traffic to pass. Sonic Tech support was busy and could help me only insofar as to think my settings are correct.

Is this an incompatibility? Am I screwed? Or is there a way to get this thing working on my "regular" ISP?

I have tried IP Passthrough, but it does not stay enabled. It never enables when I click "enable".

BTW, as BellSouth seems to use A90-210030-04, Verizon seems to use A90-210015-04, and the generic model seems to be A90-210010-04. So could I just put the generic firmware on mine to fake it out?

Where is A90-210010-04 firmware?

Thanks for any light you folks can shed on this.

If you are not using PPPOE, what do you use for your connection and authentication?

Do you have a router connected to the modem, or is it straight to the computer?

When you connect to your DSL, do you use any software to connect?

I am not aware of anywhere that the generic firmware is made available, and if you did find it, I have not heard of anyone being able to use it to fix things the custom firmware has broken.

After going over to the sonic.net site, It appears that you have an EOA (ethernet over ATM) connection.

I am not sure that the Westell will support this protocol. If you follow all the configuration instructions posted on the site for the Broadmax, you might get it to work, but I doubt it, because there is nothing to configure in the bridged ethernet mode on the Westell.

You might be able to use a router behind the Westell to do the configuration and setup the EOA, Perhaps someone else here knows a bit more.

Correct, Sonic.net uses Ethernet over ATM. There is nothing to configure, and no authentication to do (eg. no software to run).

Basically, the modem just needs to unencapsulate the ATM connection, and let the Ethernet come out. (heh, I'm in metaphors today). There's no PPPoE or anything-else-oE

That's why I was sure a PPPoE model with Bridged Ethernet support would work fine. Right now I'm using a borrowed Efficient 5660 (extended reach even) in bridged mode. But I gotta return it.

I'm still awaiting help from support@westell.com (their site sucks for support) I just hope that support address doesn't get routed to the big hungry alligator at /dev/null.

Well, there's always eBay to buy as well as SELL, right?
... (grimmacing at that thought)
