Looking for a good registry cleaner

I'm looking for a good windows registry cleaner (preferably freeware) for Windows 2000/XP machines. Can anyone give me any good recommendations on software you're using?

I was hoping to find a free one, but maybe I'll have look into shelling out $20-$30 to get a decent one.

You always get what you pay for! (or not pay for)

EasyCleaner is free. Check out the FAQs. Easycleaner had caused some problems on WinME and XP machines by removing the Windows Help system but you can add things to skip, such as help so they won't be flagged for removal. Another issue is it will remove Messenger entries and this would cause an error if one would try and run Windows Setup from the Control Panel | Add/Remove program Tab. That too can be skipped. I don't know if these are issues with Win2K or not.

Ouch! Thanks, but I don't think I'll be touching that with any OS.

lol, sounds worse than it really is I've been using it for years without any problems and I still use MS Regclean. As with any reg cleaner, you have to exercise care and make sure you are setup to make backups of anything you remove. I don't know hoe Easycleaner plays with Win2K but on my WinME box it runs without problems as long as I skip some known issues.

The same author of jv16 PowerTools 1.4 also has a brand new stand-alone registry cleaner called RegSupreme 1.0. You can read about it Here. It's shareware, $12.95 to license.

The new one from Macecraft? is good: RegSupreme.

EasyCleaner is good, but can be a bit aggressive.

jv16PowerTools is the one I use every day. The free version can still be found.

Thanks I'll give the trial a shot, I like that it's cheaper too.

I run Jv16 Power Tools, clean the reg, then run regseeker, it finds more, then run extra deep scan with regsupreme and it finds even more. I delete all everytime, and I'm still up and running. So it's my opinion that for an absolute best cleaning, just one of them will not do the trick. But a combo of them will.

I've not looked at Regsupreme yet but does it have an option to exclude (skip/ignore) certain registry entries so that don't appear in future scans?

If you don't mind spending 29 bucks, ace utilities comes with a really good registry cleaner. The author programs for speed, so it is super fast at scanning. You can exclude items from the scan, as well as do custom retores of only certain items in a deleted list. Alot of the registry cleaners are a restore all or nothin deal. I have tried many of the registry cleaners, and none have been as good as Ace. If you want just the registry cleaner without all the extra utilities, its available for 19 bucks. Please note I have no connection with the author of Ace, I am just a happy user!

RegSeeker is a great freeware cleaner that has never given me any problems. You can exclude entries and it also have a tweak section for your Windows 98/2000/XP OS.

Try RegSeeker V130. As good as jv16 (maybe better) and a lot better than those that claim to do it all as well as take your money.

You beat me to it, I have tried most and still come back to RegSeeker and on XP it has never caused me problems. but one should also get a reg. packer or defrag program as well. Win RescueXP is good, and Reg Defrag is another I am looking at.

BUT BUT BUT, remember the Reg runs the system and is VERY over rated in as much as you should clean it weekly. If you are TESTING or INSTALLING or UNINSTALLING a LOT of software than yes, but if you are not than maybe every other 2nd month or so or if you are starting to have problems with a program. Any cleaning you do will not speed up your system 100% and you will not notice any speed increase unless it was a MAJOR PROBLEM to start with. At some time or another any reg cleaning program will give you a problem, I don't care which one it is.

ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS BACKUP FIRST!!!!

Okay, from the author himself. You can edit the Default IgnoreList.dat in the Data Folder with Notepad or your favorite editor. All entries in this file will not show up on a scan.
