MLOK5My Reality Check BouncedPremium,MVM join:2000-08-17 Plano, TX | Technique! Week 12 Welcome to Technique! Week 12. Week 11 is officially closed for new photos.
The goal of this thread is for one of the members of the forum to share a photographic technique with the rest of the forum. Then we can all practice this technique & upload our results. The technique doesn't have to be limited to digital editing. It can be related to other things as well, like exposure, depth-of-field, etc. A good example of a technique thread can be found here.
Who would like to share a technique with the forum? |

Have an out-of-focus picture that you still like and want to make somewhat presentable. When no amount of sharperning will improve the quality, why not turn it into a paint-by-numbers painting.
Better yet, how about a simple set of actions to create that "paint by numbers" effect. This will work equally well on good quality photos.
The action can be downloaded from here. and is brought to you free, courtesy of GraphicsSoft.
Note, there are some other actions in this package that I haven't tried yet. -- ...Well you run and you run to catch up with the sun, but it's sinking, racing around to come up behind you again... [text was edited by author 2003-10-05 09:53:56] |

Since I don't have full blown photoshop, I couldn't cop out down easy street with Rockotman's fancyboy actions .
However, I found after playing around with different tools and effects, that one can achieve a similar effect in Photoshop Elements.
To accomplish mine. I basically divided up the image into the three main colour zones. ie. beiges-browns-yellows, blues-greys and reds.
I used the colour wand and magic wand selections tools at high tolerance to choose my areas and then create new layers of these areas.
I then applied in no specific order on the layers (and copies of them) uses of the
image-adjustment-posterize (varying from 4-16 colours)
watercolour effect. (low shadow intensity)
trace-contour effect. (a few times at different settings)
noise- dust and scratches.
and then applied a hodge podge of overlay, multiply, lighten and darken Layers styles to them all with varying transparency strengths.
(ps. I never stayed in between no stinking lines either ) -- "There are 10 types of people in this world. Those that understand binary and those that don't." [text was edited by author 2003-10-05 14:23:04] |

This was done from a mix of 3 pictures then the watercolor filter in PS 7. This is another from the Vietnam Memorial. The Honor Guard photo was to dark to use so I turned it into a painting and added the Flag and Wreath. |
