NIS2004 crashes when I go to certain web site.

Members of my family frequent »forums.toonzone.net/ so I was kind of surprised when after I went to that site I could no longer go to any web page.

Since I had just upgraded from NIS2003 to NIS2004 I figured that maybe something was wrong, so I uninstalled NIS2004 and reinstalled NIS2004.

I then tried again and got the same thing. I checked the MS Event Viewer log and found that the Symantec Network Proxy service would terminate ever single time I went to that web site. I even set it up to automatically restart the service on failure and preceded to try to load the page 10 times and saw 10 errors in the log.

Finally, using the web assistant I disabled "Block ads on this site" and the problem went away.

Can any one else duplicate this error?

quote:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7031
Date: 10/7/2003
Time: 11:18:29 PM
User: N/A
Computer: XXXXX
Description:
The Symantec Network Proxy service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 0 milliseconds: Restart the service.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at »go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

Also it seems my machine runs a lot slower with NIS2004 and NAV2004 installed. I don't have the web page slowdown reported elsewhere, but my entire machine runs slower especially when loading programs.

edit:
Forgot to mention I'm running Window XP Pro SP1 with Internet Explorer SP1.

I seem to have the same problem after i upgraded to NPF2004. I posted a little earlier here.

»NPF2004

Still none the wiser as to what is causing this.

Grrrr. Dealing with Symantec support is frustrating. For some reason no matter how I explain the problem to this guy he seems to think I'm having problem seeing graphics on that web site and is telling me to permit information about visited sites or set up a manual rule permitting graphics.

I keep trying to explain to him that CCPROXY.EXE is crashing. I don't care what my settings are, that shouldn't be happening.

There is obviously some bug somewhere in the parsing routine and that page is triggering it. I can watch using a packet sniffer and see exactly where my computer stops sending ACKS and shortly afterwards stops accepting data since the Symantec Network Service has crashed.

It's like he's not even reading my email. If I don't get an intelligent response soon I might have to use my internal Symantec contact assuming he's still there.

I know some Symantec people read these boards. Anyone want to comment?

Yes they do. They are aware of the issue and a fix is coming soon I am sure.

Until then, restart the proxy server either by:

a) Opening a dos window and type "net start ccproxy" without the quotes; or
b) restart the Symantec Network Proxy Service(CCPROXY)

Oh good. I just wish they'd tell their support people so I wouldn't get the kind of responses I was getting.

I actually found out it has something to do with iframes of certain dimensions (probably the ones NIS tries to block as ads).

For example the following code on a web page will work fine

code:
<HTML>
Test
<iframe width='468' height='160'>Testing</iframe>
</HTML>

But the following code on a web page will cause ccproxy.exe to crash.
code:
<HTML>
Test
<iframe width='468' height='60'>Testing</iframe>
</HTML>

So this link will work
But this link will crash ccproxy.exe

But from what you said, I'm assuming they already figured this out, at least I hope so.

Symantec is aware of this Web site and other Web sites. There will be a LiveUpdate to fix this issue. For now, just disable ad-blocking for this Web site and others you find.

FYI:

The recently released 7.0.1 version of NIS2004 seems to fix this problem for some sites and not others.

For example, »forums.toonzone.net now works, but »www.driverheaven.net still causes ccproxy.exe to die.

An update to the CC applications was just posted on Live Updating including an update to ccproxy.exe verion 2.1.0.610 (date Nov 10, 2003).

I'm assuming this wasn't the fix either since going to »www.driverheaven.net still causes ccproxy.exe to crash (unless that site is excluded via the web assistant toolbar).

The fix is not in this CC LU. It will probably be ad blocking fix (Norton AntiSpam).

Wow that was quick. Thanks for the info.

I hate being a pain and posting my results every time a patch is released, but since there is no knowledge base entry for this problem (as far as I can tell by searching) and since updates don't contain a text file of what was fixed, the only way for me to get feedback on this is through the forums.

I really appreciate the time you take to go through here and interact with Symantec users.

Morac: No problems. I know it can be frustrating to get the fixes. I have sites that crash ccproxy.exe too!

Is there any updated information on this? I'm still encountering this error with my installation of NIS2004.

Still waiting for the fix to be included in a LU. While not a fix, I set the ccproxy service to auto restart so at least I can surf without having to manual restart the service.

Anything new on this? I've been unable to find anything on Symantec's website.

I just did a clean install of my OS and NIS2k4 is now doing this to me.

It is my understanding that a fix is to be release very soon. It apparently got delayed.

Thanks for the response.

Any idea as to when "very soon" might be?

I gave up on this one (CCproxy crashing) a week or so ago. I disabled ad blocking in NIS and re-installed Proxomitron 4.5. Proxo seems to do a more thorough job anyway with ad removal. You might want to consider Proxo until the fix shows up....

I've set Windows to instantly restart the service after it terminates, so that works around it for now.

It just seems like this is a major issue and a fix should have been out already.

I too have it set to auto-restart on a crash, but it seems like it should have been fixed already since it is very easy to reproduce (see my 3rd post in this thread) and is a rather major issue.

Of the 2 bugs I've reported which have been acknowledged to be a problem (this one and another one, neither have been fixed and they've been outstanding for about 3 months.
