I've never had that problem...But in all fairness I've never had to return for payment, everything I've taken back was for exchange. You're probably right on the "15% for everything" - I'd hate to say different because in all honesty I'm not familiar with it. |

Good Guys, huh? Well I wondered just what the motivation was behind getting into HT. And yest diversification is a good idea, since I've rarely been in a CompUSA store and have there be more than 7 or 8 other customers.
Who said I'm trying to defend it? I'm just telling you how our side looks at it. If it doesn't appease you, in your words "Too bad".
And no offense, but if I go by the chain retail then apples to apples would be Tweeter vs Wal-Mart, Sun-Coast vs Best Buy, Dillards vs Sears. They all retail but they're also different, thus each person is going to have a different opinion as to when an apple becomes an orange.
I'd prefer we'd go high-volume, low-cost as well but that's not my call. But hey, if it works for Frys, more power to them... |

| reply to GTaylor said by GTaylor : Are the prices higher there? Most likely, but be realistic - Frys is going to be lower than any electronics store, that's comparing apples to oranges, same with comparing prices of a retail store to on-line. NewEgg is always going to have lower prices than Frys - but how fair is that a comparison?
CompUSA bought out GoodGuys this year, a high-end electronics outlet based on the west coast, hence we're expanding our options (If you stick with one format, you'd better hope that format doesn't have hard times).

| reply to Dizzyin Dallas Gotta jump in here, I also work at CompUSA (But the corporate location in Addison). I've never had to work at a store directly so most of my experience below comes from working at Best Buy/Circuit a while back.
The 15% return fee is for computer products and various other electronics (Big screens, etc) and it's not just us that does it (BB and CC also incorportate this policy as do most electronic companies). Reason for this?? Because companies got tired of taking back computers in June that had term paper docs and a harddrive full of mp3s that were burned onto a disc, because companies got tired of taking back big screens the day after the Superbowl, etc. Most companies no longer take back DVDs, CDs or other media because of copying (We even had a rash of DVDs coming back as blank because a previous person took the DVD out, repackaged it then returned it to us, thus we took it back the first time thinking it was never opened). For the most part if you're convincing you can get the return without paying (Obviously, just like all stores every employee/manager works differently. When I worked at Circuit City I've had one manager not hesitate to remove the 15% restocking fee, and another who never budged - those were fun encounters!).
Are the prices higher there? Most likely, but be realistic - Frys is going to be lower than any electronics store, that's comparing apples to oranges, same with comparing prices of a retail store to on-line. NewEgg is always going to have lower prices than Frys - but how fair is that a comparison?
And the home theater? CompUSA bought out GoodGuys this year, a high-end electronics outlet based on the west coast, hence we're expanding our options (If you stick with one format, you'd better hope that format doesn't have hard times). Also, common knowledge is that high-end products has a larger profit margin and most retail outlets are trying to state a claim while it's still open. It's anything but
Not a PR guy for the company, just want to present our side... |

| reply to flarn said by flarn : I work at compusa, the one in mesquite.
The return policy is clearly shown at customer service and all the check out lanes so you have no room to complain. Ignorance is not an excuse.
The return policy is BS and it has nothing to do with ignorance. That was a pretty shoddy statement to say there Flarn.
When I buy hardware and it has compatibility issues with my system I expect a full refund without having to pay an open item fee. What kind of crap is that?! How could I possibly know I would have issues with a piece of hardware if I didn't try it out? The example was, I needed a new sound card since I was having issues with VOIP in games. I bought the latest Sound Blaster that was out. Installed it, updated drivers and had a ton of problems for a solid week with it on my Soyo K7ADA. Now that it was not working properly I couldn't use it and wanted to take it back, but I'll be damned if I'm going to pay an open item fee.
That is why CompUSA sucks, they don't care about their customers in my opinion. I later bought an ASUS A7N8X Deluxe motherboard and a Barton 2500 at newegg.com. Funny thing was, the motherboard was price $80 more at CompUSA and I couldn't even find a Barton 2500 to compare prices. -- Just read the instructions |

| reply to flarn I dont have any problems with Comp USA other than the return policy. But, because of that policy, I never go there or buy anything from them. I know alot of people "computer geeks" and average "Joe computer user" that do not shop there either, because of the return policy. I know that the people at Comp USA are probably more informed than Best BUY or Circuit City. And ComP USA may have the best service. But its the Return Policy that makes me shop at the other stores. |

| reply to Dizzyin Dallas flarn: I'm glad you're happy with your employer and that's great. But from my point of view being the consumer, I think the store sucks. When I am in need of something, be it a game or just some accessory, I usually check mail order outfits first, but if it's something like under $40 I'll usually go to Best Buy or Fry's. That isn't a jab at your employer, that's just my preference. The fact that CompUSA seems to be losing market share should come as no surprise. I mean look at my first reply to this thread for first-hand feedback - from the consumer! -- Peace through superior firepower |

| reply to Dizzyin Dallas Yeah you do that. When CompUSA is selling some poor sucker a boxed retail AMD Barton 2500+ for $186 = Tax, when the online price is averaging $90 shipped, (that BTW is a 100% markup) it's easy to see why CompUSA stays in business.
Your company has very little selection, and what it does have is WAAAAYYYYY overpriced. I'll take my chance at Fry's any day.
With your sarcastic attitude toward the customer and returns, you're a definite candidate for UPPER management. |

They make quite a profit, or they wouldn't be able to afford remodeling 200+ stores.
The return policy is clearly shown at customer service and all the check out lanes so you have no room to complain. Ignorance is not an excuse.
As far as staying in business goes. The CompUSA in mesquite would go under if all they did was sell stuff off the floor. So what they do is they ship out 80% of all the orders from their website from that store. Thus making a lot of money.
The remodeling is not a sign of being in trouble. If you knew anything about CompUSA you would know they are doing quite well. In fact so well they bought up a chain of 80 stores in CA last month. And the company itself is not just compusa stores, they do own other businesses.
The move to home theatre is a result of the computer becoming more apart of the home entertainment, at least as far as MS is concerned. Thus the making of the Media Center PCs. Furthermore they would like to be able to compete in more than just PC/pda/cell phone/Apple/book stores.
You people keep shopping at fry's. You know they repackage returned items, broken or otherwise, right?

| reply to Dizzyin Dallas I stopped going there on the basis of price alone. For example, I needed a USB extension cable they had priced for $20 and got it off eBay for about $5, after shipping.
Their business model and pricing therein makes this chain increasingly irrelevant given the proliferation of Fry's, Altex, Best Buys, and eBay. This outfit will likely become the Hastings Music of the computer/peripheral world... |

| reply to Dizzyin Dallas CrasyLEG, kudos to you!!!! A job very, very well done. I was truly impressed when I went into the Irving Fry's. It was like going into an upscale dept store. By comparison the Arlington store is like going into a Walmart. 'Course that doesn't prevent me from being a Fry's 'rat every Friday. |

| reply to TreeTopFlyer said by TreeTopFlyer : It's pretty amazing how spoiled you get having a Fry's near you. When I'm in Arlington or Austin, I'm less than a mile from Fry's. Right now, I'm south of SA and it's a 90 mile round trip to the CompUSSR near the airport. And that's pretty much the only choice down here, except for an Altex which is a couple of miles further (but well worth the extra drive).
You'd think that Fry's would want to open up a store in the city that has the NBA champs . . .
I designed the 2 new Fry locations here in Dallas.
You have the normal 2 locations: Arlington and Garland. There is now a new location that is open in Las Colinas/Irving at MacArthur and 635.
And, for you North Dallas area Fry Shoppers, there will be a new location opening around December at 75 and Plano Parkway, in Plano.
No more having to goto CompUSA for products. |
