MHOyet2B, I've already seen what your talking about. It's Yahoo!'s UK smtp servers. I asked Yahoo! tier 2 and our email admins about it and they were unaware of it happening so I didn't get much of an answer.
If it continues I will bring it back up as it seems to be causing a lot of lag.
Thanks, -- Thank you for choosing SBC Internet Services. My name is Rick. How may I help you today? |

| reply to esung Actually the SBC System Status Page listed EMAIL as the primary outage for the last three days or so, but not all users are affected (myself not affected), backlist is just one of the problems:
Post Date 10/9/2003 09:19 AM System Component Email Status Bulletin Detail Some customers may be unable to access their email through the SBC Yahoo homepage at this time. We are aware of the issue and our E-mail Administration Team is working to resolve this issue as soon as possible. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you and we want to thank you for your patience.
Also in response to the newly announced Microsoft vulnerability, SBC Internet Services has blocked TCP port 135, which has been used by worms and viruses to spread through the Internet. Blocking this port may affect your ability to use Microsoft Outlook to access a Microsoft Exchange server, and Microsoft File and Printer Sharing over the Internet. For further information, please see help.sbcglobal.net. All other network systems are functioning normally.

| reply to esung Here's an interesting twist.
My account is SBC-Yahoo, migrated (not merged) from pacbell.net and I use OE. OE is configured to send mail to smtp.pacbell.yahoo.com. I haven't touched any settings for a long time, including user name and password.
Trying to send mail, both the other night and just now, I've gotten an error (didn't write it down, sorry, but I could reproduce it easily enough).
The thing is that I also have my firewall setup to only connect to mail servers at specific IP addresses, notably those associated with smtp.pacbell.yahoo.net, and my attempts to send mail were being blocked because the IP address that the email client was trying connect to was being blocked.
Currently my attempts to send mail are being directed to 217.12.12.194, which translates to smtp1.bt.mail.vip.ukl.yahoo.com !! I thought that was very strange indeed - so I decided to check here.
In any event, after I allowed 217.12.12.194 through the firewall, my email did get through, and I've just confirmed by sending an email to another address of mine that the email was delivered. The other night, I tried to send email that was directed to a different IP, 217.12.11.66, and I had to adjust the firewall settings in that case too!
I don't know if this is exactly related to other people's problems, unless they have firewalls that are also interfering with their email clients. (I'm using Kerio, btw.)
Actually, on my machine, it's really NAV that handles emails, but that doesn't make much difference. I had to allow NAV to connect to those respective IP addresses (and the correct ports which were already configured anyway), and once I did that, it solved my problem.
The address from the other night, 217.12.11.66 works out to smtp1.mail.vip.ukl.yahoo.com !!
I hope this doesn't confuse the issue - I only really know a few things about the way networks work, but what I experienced seems to be soomehow related to what others are experiencing here. I kind of wonder if people set up their email client to contact either of the servers in the UK, if their email would go through, but I'm not suggesting necessarily that they try. It's not what I had to do.
I'm just relieved to see that something hadn't crept into my machine that was hijacking my email, and I thought I'd offer the info I have.
Good luck! [text was edited by author 2003-10-09 22:16:55] |

| reply to CCCMTech Slap those Yahoo boys around, Rick! This isn't the first time they've blackholed SBC servers although previously the bounce messages were different. What a way to treat a business partner, eh?
Oh, I just checked and while some may have gotten through, the last two tests I sent nearly 4 hrs ago are lost in the bit bucket somewhere. Neither bounced back nor received at Yahoo. [text was edited by author 2003-10-09 18:24:04] |

| reply to esung Anyone's email address ends with pacbell.net using the following:
pop.pacbell.yahoo.com smtp.pacbell.yahoo.com
...have problems sending email to the either merged or stand alone yahoo.com email account? Just curious and didn't see any mention about the two severs that pacbell.net email users supposed to use.
I personally don't have problems (mine is pacbell.net address) sending/receiving email thru yahoo.com account (which is merged with my pacbell.net account, by the way) with the servers I mentioned above..etc... --

You guys have an sbc/yahoo email address and with smtp.sbcglobal.yahoo.com, smtp.sbcglobal.net, and mail.pacbell.net your still getting bounced back?
yes, I'm still getting it bounced with my sbcglobal.net and pacbell.net email address. (I don't think either account has upgrade to SBC/Yahoo! yet). but now the problem seems to be complicated. the bounced takes 20+ minutes to reach back to me now.. (yes, I'm constantly testing it). and it looked like it's the return leg is slow.. |

You guys have an sbc/yahoo email address and with smtp.sbcglobal.yahoo.com, smtp.sbcglobal.net, and mail.pacbell.net your still getting bounced back?
In my case I'm sending using tonydi@someotherdomain.com. When I send anything to a Yahoo.com address, using smtp.sbcglobal.net, mail.sbcglobal.net or mail.pacbell.net, it gets bounced back with the "open relay" message that esung has in his original post.
If I send using my sbcglobal address and use smtp.sbcglobal.yahoo.com the Yahoo mail goes through just fine.
This just in...if I use my sbcglobal address and use smtp.sbcglobal.net to send to Yahoo, it appears as though nothing happens. The email never arrives at Yahoo and there is no bounce received back. I know the email gets processed by smtp.sbcglobal.net because I cc'd it to one of my other accounts and it arrived in seconds. So it's just the Yahoo destination that's not getting this particular test email. I've tried this test twice with identical results. It could be that something will happen eventually, but it's been almost an hour since I've done this test and nothing so far. |

| reply to tonydi my problem is that I'm using the @sbcglobal.net address on the business DSL, and I'm still getting rejected. I've tried mail.sbcglobal.net, smtp.sbcglobal.net, and mail.pacbell.net and it's all the same. basically nothing on my end goes through Yahoo. |

tonydi Premium,MVM join:2001-05-11 San Jose, CA | reply to esung esung, what happens if you send to Yahoo using a Sender address that "matches" the SMTP server you're using? You said you have a pacbell.net address, did the email test that got rejected go through mail.pacbell.net or through one of the others? |

said by CCCMTech : can anyone confirm this?
Rick, do you have an email address someplace other than with SBC? Send something to any Yahoo account using that address, but don't use the smtp.sbcgloal.yahoo.com server (which will block your attempt to send because it's authenticating).
I've tried it on mail.pacbell.net, mail.sbcglobal.net and smtp.sbcglobal.net and all of those get bounced back. I can't try it on smtp.sbcglobal.yahoo.com because the version of Eudora I'm using can't do the required authentication so it bombs just trying to log in to send the email. CCCMTech: yes, I'm connected to DSL connection when I sent it. and I do have have any kind of proxy. although I was using a different email address, but I tried it with my pacbell.net address, it's the same results. all got rejected. I can send email to other people just fine, but just not with Yahoo. and this is the first time in 5 years since I have my DSL that this thing happens. |
