| Athlon XP cruncher
I'm a little concerned about my only AMD cruncher machine, its getting REALLY hot. Can any of you that run AMD's shed some light on this? Here's a thread I posted in another forum, thanks.

| They need lots of air. Make sure all your fans are running. Get all the dust bunnies out of there if there are any. I noticed you have a place for a fan on the front of the case. I would put an intake fan there. If all else fails, and all you are using that thing for is crunching. Take it out of the case and run it like one of our blades and see what that does. -- 13 Ghz of Crunching Power |Help With Project Hope |

| reply to HiVolt I don't know much about such things, but here is what my factory HP amd2400 shows. The first is MBM5 and the second is Sandra.
I used to worry about it, but finally I just quit watching it. EDIT: Meant to mention that the room temperature is 75.2 degrees. -- Team Discovery and Project Hope [text was edited by author 2003-10-09 17:34:42] |

| HiVolts CPU temp is way too high. It could be that there is too much or insufficient thermal grease between the chip and heatsink. Also it could be that they used a cheap thermal tape that isn't holding up to the constant heat that UD is creating by being in use 24/7. Be careful that is not the problem because I just saw 2 weeks ago a board and chip get fried from the thermal tape melting. |

| reply to HiVolt AMD's do run hotter then Intel's. But that is still way to warm. Are all your cooling fan's running okay?
I'd first check the CPU fan, maybe upgrade it too. In the short term, remove the side panel. Also blow out any dust in there, sometimes that can make a big difference. -- Join Team Discovery, make a difference. |

| reply to HiVolt Most everything I run is Athlon XP. They have at least 2 case fans, plus a Vantec Aeroflow CPU cooler. This machine is a Barton 2500+ CPU Temp is 39 C/103F system is 45C/113F. The case fans I run are also Vantec Stealth. These are all very quiet. |

| reply to HiVolt HiVolt Which way is the fan at the back blowing? It should be pushing the air out the back away from the CPU, and if you put new fan in front, have it pulling the air into the case toward the CPU.
Now imagine the air flowing through the case and across the CPU, try to get as many of those cables out of that path as possible. In the picture there is a slot that is open it should be closed. ( Your video card may have been out when the pic was taken, which the replacement of that card would have filled the slot.)
One other thought, check to see that the power supply fan and the back case fan are turning when powered up. It is common with that kind of heat, that power supply fan has failed. [text was edited by author 2003-10-10 07:50:18] |

| The fan beside the CPU is blowing air outside, as well as the power supply fan. There is no provision for a front intake fan on the bottom of the case, but I think i'll just jimmy something up over there to make one fit.... For now I shut down all my computers in the room cuz I cant take the heat they generate anyway, lol... -- Crunch for Team Discovery! Visit PlanetMADtv Want MADtv on DVD? Sign the Petition! |

| reply to HiVolt On my Athlon pc's I use a Volcano CPU fan with a little grease for conductivity and front and rear case fans. They still run a little warmer than their Intel counterparts but not like yours. As others have suggested start with checking your grease and make sure the CPU fan is spinning freely with no obstructions. Then I would consider front and rear fans. A power supply fan is inadequate. -- This is only a test... |

| reply to HiVolt One of my crunchers an AMD 1800+ OC'd to a 2000 is running a stock heatsink/fan. I have 2 exhaust fans,1 front intake fan and 1 side panel fan that blows right on the CPU. My temps range around 99-104 for the processor. -- JoinTeam Discovery |

Yeah, but my P4 2.4 running at 3.4ghz was running at 43C running UD at the same time. But it has more cooling inside than the poor Compaq machine. But one would think that a brand name machine would have a cooling solution designed with hot room temperatures in mind, but I guess not. -- Crunch for Team Discovery!
