[Satellite] DirecTV Prices/questions....

Considering a switch in the Spring to DTV....primarily so I can get Sunday ticket.....

How much, per month, does 3 boxes (one with Tivo), HBO, Starz and most regular channels cost? (Too lazy to stay on hold via 1-800 line)

ALso, I'm considering ditching my land-line and going Cell-only...>Tivo doesn't require a phone-line anymore to update channel listings, does it? (I assume not)

To receive NFL Sunday Ticket you will need a landline connected. Extra receivers are 4.99 each per month (all receivers have to be connected to the same phone line).
All pricing is available on their web site »www.directtv.com/DTVAPP/index.dsp

More expensive than I thought it was....

If I want Sunday ticket, a DVR, HBO, Starz, we're talking $89.95 a month, plus the cost of Sunday ticket? Plus I'd have to ditch my idea of losing the home phone line?

Right now I get Every channel under the sun, plus roadrunner, plus a DVR for like $110 a month.....

I wish the NFL would ditch DTV and strike a deal with the cable companies....

Technically extra receivers have to be connected to the same land line, but Directv knew when I called that I had no land line and they have no problem with me having two receivers and not having them connected. My understanding is that you can purchase sports packages on the web, they just can't be auto-renewed without having the landline connected (big deal).

A lot of people will tell you that you need a landline, but it's not really necessary as far as I can tell, because you can order PPV and sports on the web site. You don't need a phone for activation either. I listened to the wrong people for too long, that was my only reason for waiting as long as I did to get satellite. What you need to verify is the NFL Sunday Ticket (which should be fine) and the DVR as far as not needing a phone line. The DVR is one thing I'm not sure on.

This is 2003 and Directv needs to find ways to support people who don't want landlines. For people like me with Total Choice Plus and a couple receivers, they already do: a landline is not necessary for my situation regardless of what my friends tried to tell me.

I had my NFL ST renew fine without having it connected to a phone line.

I think that earlier this year they did make that change (although some reps will tell you different). I know for sure you do not need a landline for the regional sports packages (as you did in the past) nor do you need one for NFL ST.

I'm not sure about the DVR but I know that Tivo has add-on that allows you to pull down the schedule via a broadband connection. If I recall the hardware is not cheap but it is doable.

You do NOT need a land line for DirecTV programming. You only need it if you want to order PPV with your REMOTE. You can order PPV, upgrade and downgrade packages ONLINE. They want everyone to have a landline hooked up so they can "poll" the receivers, basically to see if you make purchases and such. But I think the main reason is to make sure your not trying to receive their signal without paying for it.

Thats right NO Land line needed. I let them hook up mine at first. Then found out the cheap wire they use screwed up my DSL line so I pulled it.

You will find that you can still order PPVs with out a land line or the Internet. But as soon as you plug your box into the line again all the past purchases will be billed. Some one said you can get about 25 movies for free this way but watch out.

You can ask them to fix your account for this bug by blocking the buy option. I did that so now I just order via internet too many kids in the house and mistakes can happen.

Can some of you maybe post what you pay and what kind of packages you have, so I have a sense of the different costs? The website shows general prices, but tends to be vague about specifics....

Total Choice Plus w/ Locals = $39.99/mo
– Includes all locals and 135 other channels
DirecTV w/TiVo receiver fee = $4.99/mo
2nd receiver = $4.99/mo mirror fee

$4.99 TiVo fee is a one-time charge for any and all TiVos on your set-up
You will be charged $4.99 for each additional receiver that you have. IE. 3rd or 4th receiver would be charged additional receiver charge.

I pay a total of $50.29 (get charged a whole $0.32 in tax for the TiVo charge).

The best thing about my setup is the DirecTiVo receiver. I don't know what I have done without it for the past 2 years. Dual tuners so that you can record one show while watch another or record 2 shows while watching something that you recorded previously. At this point I will never go back to cable.

*Edit: In my area basic cable is $36.99 month and that does not include all the taxes and franchise fees and it is not digital. To get digital it would be an additional $11.99 for me and that is just base.

I have Total Choice Plus w/o locals=$35.99 125 channels(i think) all digital, crystal clear.
(I use an off air antenna for locals, I don't like paying for something I can get for free)
Extra receiver=$4.99

Cox Cable charges $38.99 for basic and expanded, only 40 analog channels.

Thanks for all the good info...Ive been undecided about DirectTV for awhile mostly because of the phone connection or the SS# requirements.

I wish I could do that but I would need an antennae that would extend about 30ft above my house because of the narrow valley that my house is in.

Sounds pretty good. Thanks for the info guys. Think I'll do it primarily for Sunday Ticket. Of course as soon as I sign up, they'll offer it on Time Warner.....

HBO is like what, $8 more a month? (must get my six feet under fix)

I have the following:

2 DirecTIVO boxes, 1 in the living room, 1 in the bedroom, and 1 extra receiver in the kids room.

Total Choice Plus with Locals $39.99
2 DirecTIVO's $4.99 Directivo fee (notice you only have to pay it once)
Directv mirroring fee, for the extra receivers $9.98
HBO $11.99
Customer Appreciation Discount for HBO 6 months -$10

Total = $56.95 a month, no taxes, line fees or anything

The look on the kids face when they got their own Directv receiver (priceless) 10 channels of Cartoons for the kids.

I forgot to add one more thing, any of the DirecTIVO boxes will require a phone line, its how TIVO phones home to verify that you have service. If TIVO cannot make the call for like a month, it will cease to function.

DirecTIVO does pull the guide data down from the dish, but last I knew it still pulled software updates through the phone line. At any case, phone lines are not required for regular receivers should not not want PPV or any special events, but for DirectTIVO they are required.

Also DirecTV has some awesome TIVO deals right now $99 fully installed with 1 TIVO and up to 2 additional receivers.

fire100,

What is all the fuss about DVR and Tivo? Just wondering because I really don't know anything about, except that you can record with the built in chip in the receiver. Is that all it is, or am I missing out on something by not having a DVR w/Tivo. Thanks.

The fuss is, its the greatest piece of technology for your entertainment system besides the DVD player.

With a stand alone Tivo, you can only record one program at a time, with DirecTIVO, it has dual directv tuners on board, which means it can record two different programs at the same time, and you can watch a third previously recorded program while its taping them 2, or watch what its taping on either of the tuners built in.

Another nice feature, if you have locals through directv, you can record these right to TIVO.

One more excellent feature, is DirecTIVO captures everything digitally as it gets the data from the dish, so when you go to play your recorded program, its just a clear as it would be watching it live.

With a stand-alone TIVO, you record analog to digital, and play back a digital-analog conversion, you can stand to loose some signal loss that way.

DirecTV receiver w/TiVo (or DirecTiVo as most call them) gives you the abililty to record a show and watch another live show at the same time, record 2 shows and watch another previously recorded show, set-up season passes where it will record shows that you want recorded (whether it is first-runs, repeats, or both. You have the option), create wish lists based on certain criteria (ie. certain actors). These are the main benefits of this type of receiver, but there are many more.

I am just now a convert to the DirecTiVo concept and don't know what I did before. The wife even loves it.

Not entirely true. You can use a broadband connection and forget the phone line if you so chose.

TurboNet is not supported by DirecTV and DirecTIVO, and I believe every time DirecTV sends out a new update, it disables Turbonet, plus the minute you crack open your Tivo, you void the warranty should you need it repaired. I think all the hacks are sweet, there is a whole list of TIVO hacks at the tivocommunity, but I would not recommend them until the warranty is up.

Plus a page I just went to there stated this:

quote:

The HDVR2 DirecTiVo's will not work with these adapters at this time.

HDVR2 = Hughes DirecTIVO series 2, and Phillips Series 2 DirecTIVO box.

The series 1 boxes I am told were much easier to hack, verses the series 2.
