TIP: Add Folder Security tab to XP Home

Best thing since sliced bread
I came across this on Doug Knox's site and thought I'd share it here.
As you XP Home users know the only way to get to the Security tab on folder properties is to boot into Safe Mode.

Well not any more, thanks to this new tip from Doug Knox you too can have security settings just like in XP PRO.

"How Do I see the Security Tab in XP Home?
This tip provided by Gilles Pion

Go to: »www.microsoft.com/ntserver/nts/d···ault.asp

Instructions: Download the x86 (Intel) version of the Security Configuration Manager and save it to your hard disk. Double click the SCESP4I.EXE file you downloaded and extract the contents to a temporary location on your hard disk. Then open the folder you extracted the files to and locate the Setup.inf (Setup Information) file. Right click Setup.inf and select Install. After the installation is finished, reboot your computer.

Disclaimer: I have tested this procedure on my XP Home installation, and it works. I cannot guarantee that it will work on your system. Make sure you create a System Restore point before proceeding.

WARNING: Adjusting the permissions on a drive, file or folder can lock even the Administrator account out of that drive/file/folder."

I like anything that gives me more control over my computer, helps to make it more secure, and generally makes life a little easier. I hope someone finds this as useful as I did.

The link for the SCESP4I.EXE doesn't work. Does anyone have that file handy? MSeng?

After installing this cool addition to XP Home I do have one small concern.
I'm wondering if Windows will dump/replace these files if in the future one has to use System File Checker?
My guess is yes but I could be wrong.
Again. It's a small concern because one could just keep the SCESP4I.EXE file on hand and reinstall it if Windows does dump it but I thought I'd mention it anyway.

I too say Thanks?

I only have one XP HOME and it gets frustrating to try to do something and then remember...Oh Yeah...I can't do that on HOME.

I would be very cautious about using this -- what worries me is that this code was specifically compiled for NT 4.0, Service Pack 4 way back in October of 1998. As the readme file says, "The version of SCE available on NT4-SP4 is a backport of technology that will ship in NT 5.0." (Of course NT 5.0 was publicly dubbed Windows 2000.)

There are some differences in the security data structures from NT4 to Windows 2000 to Windows XP (at the very least), such as the layout of access control lists. And there are differences in the versions of NTFS from NT4 to XP, such as the implementation of EFS. I'll see if I can find some non-programming references, but that's how I'm familiar with this.

Another thing to check is whether this will interfere with Safe Mode operations, where I believe the Security tab is "normally" available in XP Home.

I haven't tried this, so I can't say that it will not work, but I would at least keep System Restore points up to date.

Just my opinion,

Philip Sloss

I'm just a dumb old country boy. I don't know anything about the code that this was compiled with. I make no claims as to my computer expertise.
All I know is that I installed it, I'm using it, it works fine for me, and it does not interfere in any way with the Security tab functions in Safe Mode.
I do trust the tips Doug Knox posts on his site and his word that it worked for him was enough for me to try it on my computer. After I tried it out for myself and was satisfied that it worked, I posted it here for anyone that wanted to try it out.
If anyone has any concerns about this doing any damage to their computer then by all means don't do it.

Just my uninformed opinion,

Hey, no problem; my opinion isn't all that informed -- you've actually run it, so you've put some miles on this tip. If I get a chance to try that out in the next couple of weeks on an XP Home install, I will.

A question, if you don't mind: Have you changed the security on any files/folders, and if so, how? For example, have you denied access to particular accounts or changed any of the granular settings for a particular account?

Thanks,

Philip Sloss

No one has access to my computer but me so the only things I have modified so far is preventing my children from deleting files shared over the network such as family photos and music files. (they have been known to delete pictures of themselves that they didn't find flattering) I'm still working on figuring out how to be able to share and modify files on certain computers on the network and not on others. I'll learn it by experimentation and playing with settings.

I can tell you that I am now able to share "my documents" folder on my HOME machine that I was not able to do before...without using the safe mode and accessing the security tab.

I hope someone saved the EXE because MS might have pulled it from their site!

EDIT: I had to browse through MS's FTP in order to download it. Weird.

Clicking on the link I got a Page cannot be Displayed, but browsing the FTP, I was able to download the file.

Must be a problem with my computer.

That's odd...I've shared out folders and even drives on XP Home before using Simple File Sharing...what was the problem before installing the NT4 SCE GUI?

Or are you talking about something a little different? The sharing interface (and sharing permissions) are much simpler than file system permissions and are probably less prone to problems.

Thanks,

I haven't dug into it but this must turn off Simple file sharing. Even in XP Pro if you have SFS enabled you don't get the security tab. Does anyone know if you can Uninstall it to enable SFS.

I have DLed it and installed it and it seems to be running fine. This is a real bonus because the security tab is the only thing I need from Pro. As far as connecting to a Domain at this time I could care less about it but I was considering upgrading my Dell laptop to Pro once the warranty was off, now I don't have to.

Thanks for the TIP.

Sorry for my ignorance...

"Well not any more, thanks to this new tip from Doug Knox you too can have security settings just like in XP PRO."

I recently upgraded my system from WinXP Home Edition to WinXP Pro and I do not see any security tabs in my file/folder properties...is this normal? Is there a special setting I need to turn on to see them? Or do I need to actually login as "Administrator" to see this tab?

I am logged as a user with administrative permissions.
