Just noticed there is a $9.99 activation fee as well.

Here is the help for it:

If you notice, there is a download link provided.

I downloaded the file from »www.vonage.com/downloads/vsoftphone.zip. The software is by SJ Labs, called SJphone. Version is 1.10.198. Here are the requirements:

- A PC running Microsoft Windows 98SE, ME, 2000, or XP (Vonage SoftPhone currently is not compatible with any other operating systems)
- 300 MHZ or faster processor with 32MB (98SE), 64MB (NT4), or 128MB (2000) of RAM.
- A properly installed full-duplex sound card with a headset, microphone with speakers or headphones, or any USB phone.

Vonage should allow sharing with your main phone..

I have their 35 buck/month unlimited plan. Why should I only have 500 minutes to what's essentially an add on to my main plan? I should be getting UNLIMITED use of the softphone. After all, I pay for unlimited already!!
I won't be buying this ripoff....

Re: Vonage SoftPhone Available

"All Vonage features work with SoftPhone except:
You cannot transfer an existing phone number to a SoftPhone line.

You cannot change the phone number of a SoftPhone line.
911 Calling is not available for SoftPhone lines.
Call Waiting and Bandwidth Saver for SoftPhone lines cannot be configured from the Web Account."

I'm glad to know that you can't have any active calls while the service is unavailble.

Well, when they allow this to be another endpoint for my main business line so I can use it on the road... with the same unlimited outbound calling... then they'll really have something. Another number with limited calling is no more useful than my cell phone.

Exactly!

Right now I can forward my Vonage line to my cell phone and I don't have to be using my computer to receive calls.
What value is this to anyone?

I am pretty disappointed - it does not work - it fails with proxy registration errors and it is yet another number. I want to use it on the road and have it parallel with my main number.

Re: Vonage SoftPhone Available

Just about everyone that said they wanted softphone capability for Vonage said "because I don't want to haul my ATA around when I travel" in the same breath. Why on earth would they implement it this way? At the very least, let the softphone "steal" the user's main number while it's on, and roll back to the ATA when it's off. And make it free for current account holders while they're at it!

Signup for Voicepulse if you want a softphone. They only charge 4.95 for month for the softphone feature and allow you to use any program, including SJPhone, that you want. The feature is called Open Access.

Which only does any good if you want a number in their very limited area. No thanks.

I think Vonage wants you to sign up and setup the call hunt features, if that is possible with the SoftPhone line. I have been thinking about signing up and using BlastMe with the SoftPhone, if that is available. Has anyone signed up and can tell us what you can do?

Hmm... for $20 a month I get broadband phone AND a softphone AND all of their features. Have fun with your overpriced Vonage "Texas phone number". Vonage has shown their customers nothing in the past six months that even compares to VoicePulse and P8.

I used to criticize P8 but at the very least they are consistent. I used to criticize VP but at the very least they listen to their customers and give the features we ask for. I used to criticize Vonage and... hmm, what do we get? An expensive softphone, a questionable regulatory fee, more expensive business lines, spam to people who signed up for coupons, search engines filled with referral garbage and in the past 6 months most of their upper management has left a company that had the potential to "revolutionize telecommunications".

But you're right, obviously Vonage is the better choice.

The reason of limiting minutes on a softphone account is because you can give it to several people. If it was unlimited, then however many friends you have can sponge on one account.

Re: Vonage SoftPhone Available

I don't want to drag my laptop around with me either and that's why I use my pocketpc. I loaded the vonage softphone on the pc and found that you couldn't see any options as far as sip proxy and such. I had sjphone installed prior and it uninstalled it when it installed vonage softphone. So I reinstalled sjphone an what do you know. When you start sjphone and goto the sip proxy page it shows you the info for vonage. I exported the settings so that I can load them on sjphone on my ppc. I guess I have to order the service to see if it'll actually work. It would be better if I could jst use the number I have already. That combined with my ppc and wifi at home, work and school would make a nice combination.

Speculation beyond what the Vonage website has provided is really less useful than posing questions directly to dslreports@vonage.com

I've posed some questions -- if I get useful answers, then I will post here

I don't know why I hadn't thought of putting it on a Pocket PC. I guess this gives me the excuse I need to upgrade from my old Palm to a new Pocket PC.

Re: Vonage should allow sharing with your main phone..

I agree it is of minimal value. Where the number might of some value is to someone travelling outside of the US who wishes to use this as a cheap way to call the US. Given the fact that broadband in European hotels is still not as common as in the US (I have less experience in Asia), I think this would be a small crowd.

I'm frankly toying with the notion of building my own Astericks (sp?) server as my own little call bridge and just using a free world dialup number as my entryway onto the gateway.

Re: Vonage SoftPhone Available

I dont see any use for the soft phone unless they give the "hard phone" customers a deal. 10.00 a month adds a lot of extra time to my cell phone.
Vonage needs to get the ata186 working right before they release new problems.
voice mail has been screwed up for 2 days.
