You have to get the board and look into the manual or be unlucky setup board without reading manual an find out the hardway.:( |

| This kind of reminds me of the big stink raised over Intel's Pentium III fiasco when it allowed the serial number of your processor to broadcast itself all over the place. They quickly gave us a little program to turn the little bugger off.
I'd send a quick email to the company and see what they say. I'd be willing to bet if more folks get wind of this, they'll quickly give you an option of turning it off.
__________
I just did some digging around and found this on their website. »www.phoenix.com/PlatSS/pcplatfor···ures.pdf
Is anyone else reading into this what I am? If so, this is not a good thing!
B. BIOS Security Services Because external clients must access security information or functionality only the BIOS can provide, PhoenixBIOS provides BIOS Security Services for both internal clients (such as Setup nodes) and external clients not linked with the BIOS. This new technology uses two tables, one that defines security states and the other that defines the permissions under which access to a device is allowed. It is also possible to govern individual Setup items with separate security provisions. The BIOS Security Services provide a mechanism for external clients to extract information from the BIOS or instruct the BIOS to perform a specific function. -- "Rome did not create a great empire by having meetings. | reply to jfgnet To disable this, just uninstall Phoenix net in the OS, and in the bios change Phoenix net installed? to No. Phoenix net gets installed when you accept the defaults during mobo driver installation. -- For a moment, nothing happened. | I'll agree it's after the fact...IF one did not read the manual first....which most of us don't do unfortunately The old Plug and Pray works...but as you've pointed out, not just with software but with Hardware, we need to be diligent in our protection from prying eyes that are disguising themselves as individuals that mean well ! Some of which do mean well. At least there is an out for possibly not letting it happen a second time -- Genuine Wisdom is knowing what you are talking about but deciding to keep your mouth shut. |

| reply to jfgnet Well, yes, it is dirty, sneaky and underhanded, I guess you have to know to install the drivers manually rather than accept the defaults. -- For a moment, nothing happened. Then, after a second or so, nothing continued to happen

jfgnet 12 Step Program Premium,MVM join:2001-02-14 Limbo clubs: | All IWILL's use Award BIOS not Pheonix BIOS. PheonixNet is a service built into the Firmware of the board. PheonixNet is owned by Pheonix Technologies the company that makes Peonix BIOS. |

| reply to jfgnet Update went to PhoenixNet's site, this is a link to their partners »home.phoenixnet.com/boards/index2.html page that tells the motherboard companies incorporating this program. Also Award and Phoenix are the same company as per Award's Home Page »www.award.com/. |

And who determines if you want this service activated ?? And if I turn it off can it be turned on remotely like PIII serial #'s ?? |
