Re: Is this motherboard phoning home ??

Isn't this after the fact, the board's already phoned home and passed info then installed PheonixNet on the system and you aren't even given a choice.

I'll agree it's after the fact...IF one did not read the manual first....which most of us don't do unfortunately The old Plug and Pray works...but as you've pointed out, not just with software but with Hardware, we need to be diligent in our protection from prying eyes that are disguising themselves as individuals that mean well ! Some of which do mean well. At least there is an out for possibly not letting it happen a second time

Well, yes, it is dirty, sneaky and underhanded, I guess you have to know to install the drivers manually rather than accept the defaults.

For a moment, nothing happened. Then, after a second or so, nothing continued to happen

I have a Soyo motherboard that did this. I didn't install Windows Scripting Host when installing Win98 and the first time I started my newly built computer, the damn thing crashed because this PhoenixNet thing ASSUMED that WSH was installed! It took me like two hours to figure out what was wrong & remove PhoenixNet. Talk about a bad out-of-box experience! I was so P.O.'d! How dare this piece of hardware interfere with my OS installation (and interfere so poorly)!

I wrote a nasty e-mail to Soyo and got a nice reply from a rep saying that they weren't happy about it either (I wasn't the first to complain) but since they depend on companies like Award, they couldn't do anything of an immediate nature other than forward complaints & apply gentle pressure. I made it clear that I would avoid anything marked "PhoenixNet Enabled" in the future. The Soyo rep was a real nice guy & was very prompt and helpful.

Correction: I changed the brand name of the mobo - I disremembered it wrong the first time.
