| Technique! Week 14
Welcome to Technique! Week 14. Week 13 is officially closed for new photos.
A special "Thank you" to Edit This for his billboard technique.
The goal of this thread is for one of the members of the forum to share a photographic technique with the rest of the forum. Then we can all practice this technique & upload our results. The technique doesn't have to be limited to digital editing. It can be related to other things as well, like exposure, depth-of-field, etc. A good example of a technique thread can be found here.
Something a little different this week to surprise MLOK5 when she gets back. What do you do first in Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, GIMP, or other photo-editing package? What are your favorite tips/techniques? What do you always do to almost every photo you edit?
For instance, in Photoshop, when working on landscapes, I almost always use the Ruler and then Rotate Canvas>Arbitrary to make sure my horizon is straight. Works for vertical lines, too.
If possible, please include a before and after image, and/or screenshot(s).

The very first thing i do is basic color correction, using curves in PS7. I'd rather have it look right overall first, before working on areas. |

Well okay - you guys have listed the first two things that I always do, so I will go with the third thing that I usually do...
I usually make seperate layers for the main object(s), the upper background, and the lower background. Oft times, these individual layers will require different types of filtering or color adjustments to get the final appearance I desire.
In the above shots, you can see the original photo along with a blown-up pic of the separate layers as done by masking out the areas discussed, and the final result after processing each of the layers independently.
{EDIT} I just noticed that the thumbnail of the final pic looks horrible. To get the full effect, click on the thumbnail. -- ...Well you run and you run to catch up with the sun, but it's sinking, racing around to come up behind you again... [text was edited by author 2003-10-19 08:51:31] |

I've noticed that too - the recent thumbnails are really quite horrible and convey the images they represent very poorly. Seems the gifs aren't using a full 256 colors - the thumbnail of your cat is using only 188 colors.

What are we looking for, as a goal, in the color curves? How do we know where to make these curves? -- You get what you pay for. |

| reply to ChrisJT See, now... I did try to explain that to climbers ... I color correct by feeling. My suggestion would be to try it on one of your images, and see what the curves tool is capable of. Basically, you are manipulating the contrast curves of each of the colors. -- the large print giveth, and the small print taketh away ***ATMFAQ**DIFAQ*** |

| reply to climbers I don't apply any standard fixes to any of my photo's. It all really depends on what the original pic looks like and what I think needs to be done to change it to make it look "good". Sometimes it is "correcting" the colour, sometimes it is cropping to a better fit. Other times it is distorting and removing colours depending on my mood that day.
And then in some cases I do absolutely nothing to the photo's. »i.dslr.net/pics/dimaging/image4976.jpg
So I guess about the only thing consistent with my "techniques" is that I don't limit myself in any shape or form to what I will do with them. -- "There are 10 types of people in this world. Those that understand binary and those that don't." |

LOL...I tried last night to color correct "by feeling", my feeling was, Ugh, that is horrible! Thanks for the technique though, it has gotten me started. I never really understood what the curves were used for so now I've bookmarked a page that explains using curves, so maybe it will help me out after plenty of practice. It has gotten me curious! -- Respect and Protect the Rights of Animals People who hate cats will come back as mice in their next life. |

I get the same response, UGH! LOL
I guess it'll take some getting used to after a few practices. -- You get what you pay for. |

I know the feeling; the color curves and I don't get along well at all!
There's nothing I do to all photos, except correct two hot pixels. Many times I'll play with the levels to darken or lighten a photo or use dSLR tools to bring out shadows (works very well!) or adjust exposure level. -- He never chooses an opinion - he just wears whatever happens to be in style. - Leo Tolstoy |
