| Business "load balancing" router Howdy,
Anyone here have a rundown on a product that takes two commodity internet connections (say, DSL and cable) and basically gives you redundancy? Assume no servers, and all machines are NAT'd. I'm familiar with the higher-end gear, but I'm looking for more of a "black box" solution. RAD has something like this I think, anyone have other pointers? This is an access-only (no servers) office... -- just a minute |

With the new firmware available on their website, it works real well. Costs only about $65.

Re: Business "load balancing" router I bought the XiNCOM XC-DPG402 Twin WAN Router a month ago. In most cases, it appears to be a good inexpensive solution. I have no problems using it with BellSouth FastAccess DSL, however I am unable to use it with EarthLink DSL. I have the router set up to do PPPoE for both connections, while the DSL modems are just in bridge mode.
The issue here seems to be that the XiNCOM firmware supports only CHAP, not PAP, for PPPoE authentication. BellSouth works fine with CHAP, but EarthLink only allows PAP, so I am unable to authenticate.
Has anyone else tried this router with EarthLink DSL?
Thanks, Alan |

pjay join:2000-12-20 Ridgewood, NJ | reply to sporkme Yes indeed. There's also a rounter from xincom.com (NOT Xircon) whose interface looks like the old Nexland Pro800 turbo, and therefore looks promising.
Sonicwall has higher-end products with an Enhanced OS that's supposed to do load-balancing and fail-over, but at this time, while the load-balancing appears to work OK, the failover does NOT and appears to cause SERIOUS operational problems when one WAN does quit. So stay away until Sonicwall has confirmed that this problem is fixed.
Do a google search for "dual wan router" and you'l find more info!

| reply to sporkme Here are two more to the list:
Netscreen 5GT $500 10 user $1000 unlimited , 1 internal, 1 DMZ + 1 WAN + serial FW/Router/VPN. Integrates with Trend for A/V (extra cost)
Fortinet 60 $1000 10 user $1500 unlimited. 1 internal, 1 DMZ, 2 WAN, 2 USB (USB or serial modem with convertor) FW/Router/VPN/ Anti-Virus, Intrustion detection/prevention.
I've used both - enterprise features- good up to T1 or fast DSL speed.
Failover is dependent on pings.

| reply to sporkme For what it's worth, we decided on the Symantec FW/VPN 200. While the "suggested price" is about $800, the street price is closer to $500. This is the former "Nexland" box. I'll be testing in the next few weeks on a pair of DSL lines if anyone is interested.
The main things that brought me to this box were:
-configurable ping targets to determine if a particular line is up/down -dyndns client built-in -excellent reviews on the Nexland product
Thanks for all the input! -- just a minute |

 | reply to sporkme I've seen lots of issues with LinkSys gear so I'm suggesting the XiNCOM XC-DPG502 priced at about $240 on the street.
