Mele20Premium join:2001-06-05 Hilo, HI kudos:4 | reply to freeze I just saw that. I tried it and I have a different background on the post. I don't like it!! Terrible idea. Why was this approved???? And who came up with "I'm feeling lucky"? I was very suspicious of that and I had not the slightest idea that if I clicked it that my post would post with only one preview. The second post I tried it on, I didn't preview at all and it posted ...but who would know that is what that phrase means? Dumb phrase for what it does...it is not in slightest descriptive of what happens when you click it at all! I thought it was some silly joke I would see on the screen when I clicked it.

SpensergigThreadkiller SupremePremium,MVM join:2000-03-26 Bradenton, FL | Mele20 - The phrase (in fact, the button) is lifted shamelessly from the main Google page.
It means (has always meant, in this context) that there's no need to preview, you'll accept whatever results from your typing.
Personally, I do wish that people would proofread their work, but I know that most of them won't even if forced through the preview mode. |

Mele20Premium join:2001-06-05 Hilo, HI kudos:4 | That's right! I've seen that on the Google page, but I have never clicked on it. It seemed so dumb on a search engine page that I had no interest in exploring it....and now you have that same dumb phrase that doesn't mean anything here! "I'm feeling lucky"...about what? I thought it diminished Google to have something so silly and now we have it. Ugh! Why not just have a box that says "bypass preview"?. That would be understandable, sensible and wouldn't look so silly. I still wouldn't want even that though because I don't think we should be able to bypass preview. I thought this site would never allow that.
Does this mean that you can use chat shorthand, misspell everything now and get away with it? The spelling warning won't activate if you choose this button? -- "Everything can be taken from a man or woman but one thing: the last of the human freedoms - to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's destiny." There has been a bit of talk lately from different mods and members lately about the "dumbing down" and quality of the posting styles in many forums.
said by mr sean: This forum, as I have said many times, is what YOU make it.
said by mr sean: Intelligent conversation was sucked away long ago.
And this feature modification doesnt contribute to the problems here?

After you have typed out your question, please take advantage of the preview feature to correct any spelling/grammatical/punctuation errors. Re-read your post three or four times and try to make it as clear and concise as you possibly can. The better we can understand what you're trying to get help with, the quicker we can help you. If it's difficult to explain the problem in words, attach a screenshot if at all possible. -- If it offends you it must be true! LOL | "My H2 Hummer Gets +25 MPG" - Peace OuT! LOL |

So the point of this is to create more work for the mods?! There will be more "heymods" because as the saying goes "if you give them an inch they will take a mile". I already ignore many posts where in the past I would have tried to offer help. Now, I don't understand about one-third of the posts as they have all these chat abbreviations and stuff that I don't know anything about. I haven't used "heymods" on these posts because I thought "heymods" was for important things. In the case of these ignorant, lazy posters I figured they would just not get the help they needed so I have been shrugging my shoulders and gong to the next thread.
Now I think it will just get worse. I don't want to participate in forums or sites where this is prevalent. One reason I joined this site originally was because I was so impressed with how the serious forums were handled and requiring preview and having guidelines for posting impressed me because this site stood out from the norm. We appear to now be going backwards. -- "Everything can be taken from a man or woman but one thing: the last of the human freedoms - to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's destiny." What he said.
I'll probably use it on short replies like this one, and not use it on longer ones.
If someone is going to say something stupid they will say it no matter whether it is one click or two clicks. If someone wants to ignore all the spelling suggestions, they will ignore them anyway.
edit: after-thought: if you have fortunes turned off, then you get to 'preview' your post anyway, because the response to I'm Feeling Lucky, is your post. [text was edited by author 2003-10-23 09:52:54] |
