Re: Good security-related programs?

Here's a list of utes that I have been using been trying out/using. I know that others here can add edit/add to the list.

  • AdAware - FREE

Lavasoft is the industry leader and most respected provider of anti Trackware solutions. We have developed several applications that will provide you with the means to keep your computer or network free of these compromising and intrusive threats to your privacy.

  • SpyBot - FREE

Spybot - Search & Destroy can detect and remove spyware of different kinds from your computer. Spyware is a relatively new kind of threat that common anti-virus applications do not yet cover. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you didn't intentionally install, if your browser crashes, or if your browser start page has changed without your knowing, you most probably have spyware. But even if you don't see anything, you may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging that is silently tracking your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile of you that will be sold to advertisement companies. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm in trying to see if something snooped into your computer, too

  • Hijack This - FREE

HijackThis examines certain key areas of the Registry and Hard Drive and lists their contents. These are areas which are used by both legitimate programmers and hijackers. It's up to you to decide what should be removed. Some items are perfectly fine. You should not remove them. Never remove everything. Doing that could leave you with missing items needed to run legitimate programs and add-ins. This Page will help you work with the Experts to clean up your system. For those of you needing instructions on how to Copy and Paste the contents of a text file into a Forum Post, please look at the Table of Contents. A link to the instructions is included.

  • HTAstop - FREE

HTAstop is a small, simple, free program for users of Windows95, 98, NT, 2000 or Windows ME which allows you to shut down Microsoft's "HTA" (Hypertext Application) capabilities in any version of Windows. It also permits you to UNblock HTA should it be required momentarily and then turn it right back off once you've used any necessary "legitimate" HTA applications downloaded from a website. "HTA" is a part of Microsoft's "VBS Scripting Host" capabilities which is provided with Internet Explorer and other Microsoft products.

  • Mizo - XP Netstats Bar - FREE

Mizo - XP Netstats Bar is an application that monitors all of the open ports on your computer. It tells you what ports are open, what addresses they are trying to contact, and what applications are trying to open these ports. It is extremely important for you to know what is going on behind the scenes as this will help you prevent spyware and even hacking on you computer.

  • CleanDisk 2003 - FREE Evaluation

The new version of our popular disk cleanup utility. With hundreds of new features and enhancements, this new version should be a very good utility that no one should be without. Designed to free up disk space by deleting temporary, abandoned, and other unnecessary files. Clean Disk 2003 includes a new graphical user interface where all program functions can be accessed and used from a single & simple screen. More advanced than previous versions, yet easier to use and flexible program.

  • Dr Delete - FREE

    Having trouble deleting:

    In-use files?

    Spyware Components

Index.dat and other annoying files that are 'In use'?

So was I! I sat down to work, researching the Win32 API and scheduling files to be deleted... and so Dr. Delete was born! Dr. Delete can delete in-use files by scheduling them to be deleted at the next startup. It calls upon the Win32 API, so it's using safe and tested code. Written with Visual C++ / MFC. Native executable, MFC compiled into program (since most people don't have MFC 7.1 )

Works on NT/2k/XP/2003 by calling the MoveFileEx() API function.

Works on 9x/ME by appending/creating the WinInit.ini file.

  • SpiderBit - FREE

I discovered a privacy 'bug/feature' in Internet Explorer3/4/5 (for important information about IE6, see history): IE stores the visited URLs in some hidden files and whenyou clean your cache and history, this information is not deleted! I wrote a software program to scan these hidden filesfor URLs and to put those URLs in a file. So the user's privacy is at stake because anyone with this program, can go to the PC of somebody else and see the URLs he has visited!

  • Windows Media Player Scripting Fix - FREE

Disable/enable scripting in Windows Media Player (scripting could be used for various exploits).

  • xp-AntiSpy - FREE

MS has integrated some tools and services into the system, that automatically can connect to the internet without noticing you about it. Nobody knows what's possible to transfer from your computer to the connected servers via these services. So if you want to stop these services, you can do this manually and take a walk through XP, or you use my tool which does the same thing, except it saves you time.

  • Password Safe - FREE

Password Safe protects passwords with the Blowfish encryption algorithm, a fast, free alternative to DES. The program's security has been thoroughly verified by Counterpane Labs under the supervision of Bruce Schneier, author of Applied Cryptography and creator of the Blowfish algorithm.

  • UnPlug n' Pray - FREE

"eEye has discovered three vulnerabilities within Microsoft's UPnP implementation: a remotely exploitable buffer overflow that allows an attacker gain SYSTEM level access to any default installation of Windows XP, a Denial of Service (DoS) attack, and a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack.

eEye would like to stress the extreme seriousness of this vulnerability. Network administrators are urged to immediately install the patch released by Microsoft at MS01-059.

The most serious of the three Windows XP vulnerabilities is the remotely exploitable buffer overflow. It is possible for an attacker to write custom exploit code that will allow them to execute commands with SYSTEM level access, the highest level of access within Windows XP. The other two vulnerabilities are types of denial of service attacks. The first is a fairly straightforward denial of service attack, which allows an attacker to remotely crash any Windows XP system. The crash will require Windows XP users to physically power down their machines and start them up again before the system will function.

The second denial of service attack is a distributed denial of service attack. This vulnerability allows attackers to remotely command many Windows XP systems at once in an effort to make them flood/attack a single host.

  • IE-SPYAD: Restricted Sites List for Internet Explorer - FREE

IE-SPYAD is a Registry file (IE-ADS.REG) that adds a long list of known advertisers, marketers, and crapware pushers to the Restricted sites zone of Internet Explorer. Once IE-ADS.REG is "merged" into your Registry, most direct marketers and crapware pushers will not be able to resort to their usual "tricks" (e.g., cookies, scripts, popups, et al) in order to monitor and track your behavior while you surf the Net.

  • Spyware Block List File - FREE

Tired of all that Spyware and Adware crap being installed by ActiveX ? But don't want to lose out on functionality?

We have created a system that blocks all known "bad" ActiveX controls from running inside Internet Explorer by setting the "Kill bit".

When a page tries to install a component from our list, it will fail.
When a page tries to use a component from our list that was already present on your system, it will fail too!

Other, "friendly" components are not affected.
For a full technical explanation how this works, look at this Microsoft article.

  • StartupMonitor - FREE

StartupMonitor is a small utility that runs transparently (it doesn't even use a tray icon) and notifies you when any program registers itself to run at system startup. It prevents those utterly useless tray applications from registering themselves behind your back, and it acts as a security tool against trojans like BackOrifice or Netbus.

  • RegistryProt 2.0 - FREE

RegistryProt is a 100% free, standalone, compact, low-level realtime registry monitor and protector, that adds another dimension to Windows security and intrusion detection. By monitoring important locations and keys in the Windows system registry, RegistryProt will alert whenever a key is added or changed, and then give the option of accepting the key change, reverting back to the original key setting, or deleting the key.
