Confirm password takes you to wrong page

This is a minor thing, but it would be nice if, after confirming my password, I was taken to my home page which is my post list. Instead, I am always taken to the main page of the site. That is not where I was going when I was "interrupted" so the site could have me confirm my password. I think that after confirming, the site should take me to the page I was trying to go to in the first place.

(Have I made this post long enough so that I don't get the uglies? That is something I sure don't want to "catch")!

I'd like to not have a page telling me I'm signed in for the next 30 day and how many tool points I have left every time I sign in (daily). When I sign in, I'd like to go to either the main page or right to the forums.

I'm for that confirm password option going away all together. your cookie doesnt last 30 days if every 10 or so days you are asked to confirm your password (in effect you are logging in there)

It would be better if we had shortcut buttons after logging in, one under the next button that said "go back to where I was" or similar. Some people do want to be shot back to the front page you know

Actually confirm password was always designed not to take you to the home page, but to drop you wherever you wanted to go. I tested it just now on my account and that is what it did. It is possible that something was going wrong sometimes with that, the location was getting carried in the URL (could be corrupted by something?) or .. I don't know .. since I could not reproduce it.

Nevertheless in the interests of streamlining, the new cookie system is this:

• browser side permanent login cookies now last for 180 days. browser session login cookies last as usual only as long as the session does.

• if you continue to use the site then the cookie is refreshed on our side of the fence (will not ask for any confirm password). But if you are idle for 3 days or more, you will have to confirm your password to continue, or get logged out (helps if you login somewhere else, and walk off).

• When you login, you also get told the last IP that we saw a login from over the last 2 weeks, that is NOT the IP you are now on (if there is one). If you know your IPs, this will tell you if someone else has got hold of your site password. You do have to login to see this info, though! I think people who care about security tend to login and logout more so they will see it.

• You can login 5 times at most. (eg: two browsers at home and two at work). After that, the oldest login session is deleted and no longer usable.

Just for completeness, in these days of key loggers and what-not, I would like the site to continuously display a list of IPs the site has seen you on over the last 24 hours. Not on all pages, but somewhere that you would notice from time to time. Like message dialogs. Or forum post screens. Or something.

Hmmm...I should not have said "always taken" to the main page after confirm password. This actually has been fairly recent and not consistent across all my browsers. IE takes me where I was headed. Firebird takes me to the main page and Mozilla recently began doing this, but not every time. It has seemed like "always" I suppose because I seldom use IE.

> But if you are idle for 3 days or more, you will have to confirm your password to continue,

Does this mean I have to visit here once every 72 hours on each of my three browsers if I want to avoid the confirm password screen? I never log out (even though I am reasonably security conscious). I don't want to have to be logging in to my homepage all the time! Thus, I won't see any of the IP information correct? If you never logout does the 5 times apply?

>I would like the site to continuously display a list of IPs the site has seen you on over the last 24 hours

That is an excellent idea and I hope that can be done.
