Welcome to Technique! Week 15. Week 14 is officially closed for new photos.
Thanks to climbers  for guest-hosting for me last week while I was away. I really found it interesting to see what "standard" approach people have for editing their pictures.
So, here we go with the usual small print:
The goal of this thread is for one of the members of the forum to share a photographic technique with the rest of the forum. Then we can all practice this technique & upload our results. The technique doesn't have to be limited to digital editing. It can be related to other things as well, like exposure, depth-of-field, etc.

Plano, TX | Selective Focus Using Color
There are several ways we can draw attention to our subjects in our photographs. One way to draw the viewer's eye to your subject is by using color creatively.
Different colors can evoke different emotions. Some colors make us feel warm and fuzzy like yellows, reds, and oranges. That's why those golden hours of the day, when the sun's light is much softer, can make for such beautiful photographs. Cooler colors on the other hand, evoke different emotions. Purple is usually associated with royalty, power, and uniqueness. Green, the color of nature, can be associated with youth, good health, cleanliness, and growth. Blues are soothing and peaceful.
We can use color as the primary subject of our photographs. We can use contrasting color to make our subject stand out. We can use colored filters to create a mood for our pictures. The list goes on.
Try using color to draw focus to your subject. The possibilities are limitless. Here are a few of my own examples.

Re: Technique! Week 15 Looking back I find that I really don't have a single photo that uses color to try to set the mood or evoke an emotion, but it's something I really want to try. Good technique pointer!

T_Wrecks, this is awesome! I love how the blue lettering and the blue park bench match. The white background makes it pop, and the brick wall/canopy combination provide a nice frame for your subject. Very nice!!

By readjusting the color saturations via histogram adjustment it seems to make the signs in this shot leap out at me. Makes me feel like I'm back on that road.
I like the way that MLOK5 uses color in the setup for her shots. To me this kind of foresight is something I need to work on. But in my case, most of my shots are extremely candid. In a candid shot I've found that breaking out the histogram and saturation tools will do a lot for accenting colors.
I'm hoping I'm getting close to what Fritty was wanting for us to try this week.

Walt, this is great! What we're trying to do this week is draw attention to the subject of our picture using color. Your immediately drawn to the subject of your picture b/c of the vivid yellow and green signs. The lines in the road also help lead the viewer right into the picture. Nice job!

Those eyes by themselves are striking enough, but the blue color - WOW. The blue shirt accentuates the eyes that much more. This expression is priceless -- a classic capture, IMO! Great job!
