ZoneAlarm Pro Alternatives

I just uninstalled ZAP because it keeps giving me errors in event viewer.

I use a HomePortal 1000s with hardware firewall so I have no problem sitting here without a firewall at all. I do need a software firewall though. The market nowadays seems to be flooded with a whole range of software firewall products to choose from. What would be a worthy replacement for ZAP? I love ZAP otherwise... it's absolutely great as a firewall but I think it's causing system instability here.
I might just try reinstalling it and see what happens.

How bout... Agnitum Outpost Pro?

Any feedback? I'm having a hard time finding reviews online.

I had problems with ZA Pro a while back also. So I moved on to a free firewall, Kerio Personal Firewall.

Just curious, what kind of errors were you getting in event viewer?

Errors included the TRUE VECTOR ENGINE screwing up all the time... and som part of the engine being corrupt, therefore being dumped and backed up from some other location.

I mean, hardcore stuff. I use AGNITUM OUTPOST for now and it seems very solid and cool, so far it's got pretty much everything ZAP had for me and looks even nicer.

What version of Kerio Personal Firewall are you using. I'm still at 2.1.5, which works fine. Does KPF 4.x add anything significant?

Installed Outpost on the old Win98 machine after I bought ZAP for this new WinXP. Wish I had tried Outpost first, I would have put it here instead of paying for ZAP. You would think that money would buy a good product.

Yeah that's what I was guessing. I used to get the "true vector service" error in event viewer all the time. One day it just stopped...no clue how/why.

Translation: You think ZAP sucks, and Outpost rocks?

Outpost seems to be very similar to ZAP, except it works right. I get the same application permission popups that I love and everything just works , I'm very satisfied with Outpost.

Well, lucky you... for me it didn't stop. Doesn't matter, I'm a happy OUTPOST user now . That firewall looks much cleaner than ZAP and is easy as hell to use.

Which Outpost product you using? I'm assuming Outpost Firewall Pro? I'm not really wild about ZAP to be honest...
Could you possibly post a couple of screenshots of it if you have time?

2.1.5 works just fine for me, so I'm sticking to this until someone finds a major flaw in it.

Hi MaRLi,
To many controls on ZAP. Where as Outpost just does its thing
Occasionally I have to shutdown and restart ZA to let my email download from my ISP. Have tried to follow instructions form various post here.
(Just like the car, if it breaks down, time to trade it in.)

I'm really happy with Outpost so far . No problems at all.. no annoying True Vector Engine errors in eventvwr. Only need to figure out how to stealth ALL my ports.. some are stealthed, but the majority is "closed".

A couple things I don't like about Outpost: it blocks ALL popups, bad or ones you want. Referrer blocking also greatly restricts the number of sites that load right. Agnitum also is a little slow with fixes sometimes. Otherwise, I like it more than ZA Pro. Difficult decision.

Yes, their are some good pop-ups. But in general, they were getting out of control. ZAP took care of those on this machine.
(At times I do miss them, but after a second or two I get over it. lol)
