| Yahoo, DSL, Mac and me
I've had SBC Yahoo DSL and a new G4 MDD for about 10 weeks now. What have I learned?
1- DSL has been upgraded. I'm on a loop back or ???. My upload has increased from 106 to 206. I'll never see 256 but the signal is very steady and I don't have to constantly reboot the modem. 2- I can run a speed test from speakeasy but not from SBC. 3- WinPPPoE hosed my computer. It killed my TCP/IP stack. 4- I tried to load Yahoo software on my P3 test machine. It refused to install and I had to call tech support to finish the connection. 5- I never had a sync problem from the minute I connected. 6- When I tried to use IE 5.5 browser, Yahoo took over, added itself to the browser bar and changed my home page to Yahoo. 7- After the 10 day sync period passed, I changed my Internet connections to my NAT Firewall Router. (No PPPoE on computer) 8- When I went to uninstall Yahoo, I couldn't find an uninstall button or file. Apparently when the initial failed, it also failed to install the uninstall feature. 9- I uninstalled Yahoo the hard way. I edited Windows Registry. My PC instantly returned to its normal happy self. So did IE. 10 - SBC tech support only supports connection issues and Yahoo browser; it does not support Macintosh even though it provides installation software for it. 11- Mac users cannot use Yahoo home page.
Conclusion: DSL and every Mac computer I own work fine together. SBC Enternet software has never installed properly on any Windows PC I ever owned. I do not understand why. I tried it on 5 different PCs, and it would not load.
Yahoo is not better; It adds bloatware to an already buggy installer, imho. I resolved all software, PPPoE and connection issues by assigning Internet connections to my NAT Firewall router. OS X has a built-in software Firewall that does not conflict with the NAT router. The worst I can say is that Mac mail is harder to set up on DSL than my Pegasus mail for Windows. However, the advantage to Mac is once set up, I do not have to worry about most viruses, worms or trojans because very few are written for Unix based systems.
No computer, no hardware, no software is perfect. One is not better than the other. When you find the "right" combination, enjoy it. |

Sbc does too, offer Mac support. However there is no SBC Yahoo browser for the Mac. Mac users can use the Sbcy homepage! |

| And I will tell you that tech support told me they did NOT support Mac -that SBC might, but they do not. I will also tell you that I cannot access the area reserved for my personal webpage. This is my experience. If you use a Macintosh computer, your experience may be different than mine. |

I don't know who told you that they don't support Macintosh...I happen to know about 30 people off the top of my head that specifically do Macintosh support for SBC.. -- "Only the dead have seen the end of war" - Plato |

| reply to linicx It seems I do need to clarify myself quite a lot because I made a gross error; I mixed machines in the same paragraph. Let me try to get it right this time.
SBC supports Mac; Yahoo does not.
I could not use the Yahoo personal webpage at Geocities using W98se. I think the error message said I needed XP or ME. It also said they were sorry but the area was not available for Macintosh users. I did not persue it as I am not going to upgrade to a new MS Operating Sytstem. I disabled Yahoo.
Imho, there are a dozen ways to give users home page space without requiring a *special* Operating System. ISPs do it every day.
I am sorry for the confusion. |
