 WEBTREND_ID Cookies

Sorry, I would normally look this up myself but I have been exceeding busy -- using the Internet for WORK and not play!

In doing so, I needed to stick several sites in my Trusted zone because they needed to have Active Scripting. Well, that then allows the sites to place first-party (not 3rd) cookies on to my computer. Most of the cookies are "userid" types and I consider those benign. But, some are named "WEBTRENDS_ID" and the cookie data begins with my IP address. I am not sure I like these!

Does any know what exactly they are for and who is using them? (I suspect I know they are for tracking, but does any know any more information about them?) Thanks.

Webtrends is a company that makes several tools for web traffic analysis and statistics. Mostly log analyzers.

It is a legit company and they are not in the spyware business. Most big web sites use their tools for hits statistics.

I've used in the past their log analyzer and you can make some pretty cool graphs and reports on your site hits.

Regards
Martin

Just wanted to add that amongst their customers you can find companies such as McAfee, as reported here.

Cheers

Thanks. Doesn't sound nearly as bad as I first imaged:

How about "WebSideStory" -- which I think is a subset of "Hitbox"?

WebSideStory used to be also a hits and traffic analyzer but with a different purpose.
Their main usefulness was - and I'm talking about 3 years ago - syndication. For instance, you could display their statistics on your site as part of the content. Some of those statistics were useful for web developers and included the percentage of used browsers, screen resolution, color depth, etc.

You can see an example at EchoEcho on their right side bar, though I can see that they have changed to statistics provided by The Counter. They used to come from WebSideStory.
