Slow upstream

Our company has a DSL line in the Oak Creek, Milwaukee, WI area, from SBC Yahoo!

Our package indicates we should have 768Kb-1.5MBb downstream, and 256Kb upstream.

We get 1.2Mb downstream, which is fine for our purposes. We are looking into getting at least 2 VoIP lines, but our upstream always seems to be around 100 Kb.

As I understand stand it, the service 'upgrade' was supposed to increase our package to 256Kb-384Kb upstream, variable---

What can I do to improve this? Customer support says its not their problem, that they can try and bump us up to the 1.5Mb-6.0Mb/384Kb, and maybe our upstream will improve.

I'm skeptical to say the least.

Should I try rewiring our building? Will that help?

Thanks for any advice,
samiran

If you are getting 1.2Mbs download, you should be capable of more than 100kbs upload. It sounds like they have you on the wrong package. IM one of the techs here and see if they can check for you.

Also, I dont believe going to a higher priced package is going to "improve" your upload speed capability. If your capable of it, then your capable of it. Spending more money is not going to change your capability. It is the same line and the same distance. The higher priced packages give you more speed if your line is capable of it, but paying more is not going to improve your line quality.

Roger.

I'm not all familar with how dsl works.

My understanding of cable (which I have a great deal my experience with) is that line quality has little to do with speed.

I guess DSL is different in that regard.

I don't remember our distance from the office, but I remeber the tech saying that we were pretty close, and should have no problem getting the highest speed..... So....

Who do I IM in this forum, and what information do I need to give them?

Thanks, I'll keep browsing around for info

Either CCCMTech or Beach Boy can help you. Just IM them with your DSL phone number and reference this thread. If they need more info, they will let you know.

Hmmm...I may have been posting in the wrong forum.

We are located in Oak Creek, WI. We are SBC customers who used to be ameritech customers.

If this is indeed the wrong forum, can someone move my thread, please? (Any kind moderators out there?)

Also----Anyone have any similar sort of experience? Did upgrading from a lower package (where you did not get more than 50% of your advertised upload) to the Expert package get you more upload bandwidth?

Thanks for the time, guys

I don't know about a kind moderator. Looks like you had to settle for me.

Send David See Profile an instant message with your DSL telephone number, and a link to this thread. DSL IS distance dependent, and he'll be able to check into how much your line could handle, and see if other problems causing a lower sync are fixable.

Check it now

I just bounced the profile, looks like your DSLAM was upgraded for the new speeds. Some of these have been causing all kinds of funky problems across the board

I'm not going to be in the office today--I'll check it first thing tomorrow.

Thanks very much

Just tested our speeds:

»support.sbcglobal.net/cgi-bin/sp···obal.net

Before: ~1.2Mb/100Kb

After: ~1.2Mb/212Kb

That's a pretty good improvement!

Now we have to think about upgrading to the expert package...I wonder how that would work out?
