| Anyone notice there is lots of DNS ping timeouts?
All,
Anyone else from the Bay Area, California or in California are experiencing lots of ping timeouts from the DNS servers for the past two weeks? It now happens much more frequently like 5 - 10 times a day. It really gets on my nervous. When I call technical support serveral, I always get the same answers to try another dns servers and blah... Then I ask them if they have someone else look into the problem and he just ignore my question and goes on. I didn't wanted to give the support person a hard time and so I just I'll wait and hopefully it will be fix.

Yeah, I'm in Brooklyn NY, and have lots of DNS timeouts. I can't find Hotmail half the time. It's really fucked. Here are the DNS I use:
198.6.1.65 198.6.1.181
I've changed them a couple of times now. |

| reply to kenneth11z I've been having random DNS timeouts also. This is extermely annoying. I called Cyberonic twice in the last 2 weeks about this and they had me change DNS numbers each time. The last recommendation was to use the Sacramento DNS server (I'm in LA) which seems to have helped. But if this problem keeps coming back then "I'm outta here".
my dns servers:
198.6.1.146 (sacramento) 198.6.100.25 |

| Some of us are using DNS servers from SBC or other ISPs. It is kinda stupid but at least this way you don't need to give up the great DL/UL speed just because of DNS issue.
Also did you try pinging all of the DNS servers below and use those with shortest ping? »DOES CYBer DNS |

Yeah, WC's DNS servers are crappy. One day, 1 DNS server will work fine, then weeks later, it's crappy. I hated switching around between all the WC DNS servers, so now I use Speakeasy's DNS servers, no more problems with timeouts. |

I use the DNS servers that mig288 listed, they're all Speakeasy's DNS servers. Specifically, I use the Washington, D.C. POP (DSL/T1) 66.92.159.2 - 216.231.41.2 since I'm closer to that one. |

Thanks posting the DNS for speakeasy. I'll change them as soon as I post this reply. hehehe...
I'm going to ditch Cyberonic once my contract is over soon. I'm real tire of their excuses that they keep saying their DNS server is fine when I told them there are lots of people are also complainting in this forum. All they do was to give me a bunch of DNS list and I told them I have all of them and I'm tire that I have to switch over manaually every time it is time out.
At first, they say it have to do with the hardwired dns information on the Efficient Router which I'm using my NetGear Router. The later today when I spoke to Tony who claim to be the Techniqucal Manager and saying there is something with my NetGear Router. He advice to use only the Efficient Router and to test to see if I still ping out. How can that be when others also having the same problem. I even said haven't you guys check out this forum about the DNS issues other users experiment? He replied saying that if they call we'll fix the problem with them. That's so funny... Tomorrow, I'm going to call them and see what they have to say.
I still remember in the beginning how many people said they have professional technical support. Oh yeah right... If they do, they should at least admit the dns problems that we complaint.
Even worse, their email server is slow like turtle that I never use the e-mail accounts that was provided. I'm still yahoo e-mail account.
Well, I have learned my lesson. Cyberonic is history as far as I'm concern.

| reply to kenneth11z I was just re-reading my post and I notice there were so many errors because I'm still frasurated.
Let me clearify about the Efficient Router. I have the Efficient Router use as a Gateway and my NetGear Router as a regular router. Since it was my 9th call to technical support. They have gave me all the solutions they can. First, give me a list of DNS servers to try for the first 4 calls. After I was tire, I ask them to give me all the DNS server so I don't have to call back. So I still experience with dns ping timeout. I call them and they said it is my Efficient Router problem with the DNS hardwire into. That's the word hardwire that technical support use. Anyway, he said he remove it. So I give it try shoot. But still happens. So I call back and complaint and then ask me to give them a list of DNS servers that I got which was so tendious... Anyway, I follow through and give me some dns servers. Again, the same problems. Finally I got a chance to speak to Tony who claim to be the Technical Manager when I ask to speak to a Technical Manager. He told me it was my NetGear Router and told me to use Efficient Router for now and see if I still a ping time out. Now, I'm still experience the ping time out. So tomorrow, I'll call back and see what they have to say. hehe... I'll keep you guys updated on this.
Oh yeah, I told them over the phone that I got ping timeout and told them to ping it on their side, it said it was fine by pinging my gateway. That was so funny after I have to correct Tony that I'm having problem with the DNS server not the gateway itself since I still have internet connection. Also, when I ask him to the DNS server I'm using he said it was fine on his side. Which suspect that's a lie.
Anyway... maybe they'll hate me after I post this. Oh well...

1st IP = Primary DNS Server 2nd IP = Secondary DNS Server
You can pick either one (they're both DNS servers), or you can pick both and put them both in your router. |

Kenneth, I wouldn't go as far as to dump Cyberonic. My connection has been flawless , Although they do have issues with DNS, its really not Cyberonic's fault. They are resellers, of MCI(Worldcom) and when you call and let them know about the DNS issue, they should open up a ticket to get it resolved. My $0.02c |

| reply to kenneth11z To mig288: Yeap, that's the whole purpose. Now that I switch over using Speakeasy DNS, I have no request timeout so far. And I'm using my NetGear router. I'm going to ask them to request a trouble ticket to have MCI fix the DNS servers problem. If for some reason they don't open the ticket and continue to assume the DNS servers is fine from their side, then both Cyberonic and MCI sucks becuase Cyberonic assume that MCI is not going to take a look at the problem and fix it. So if they are smart and specially if they reading this forum, they better fix the problem soon.
To BBC: Whatever router you use, there should be a web client that you can go into the router's configuration to the change DNS. Please refre to your router manual and it will tell you how. It will provide a IP like 192.168.0.1 and enter that in a web broswer to access the web client to change the router's configuration. As for the Efficient, I'm not too sure if you can't the dns information since only Cyberonic technician able to access to it. I might be wrong, but I have never try. I'll ask the technician while I'm going to call them.
If I were you, for now, use Speakeasy DNS servers for now. I'm using the San Diego as the DNS for mines. I'm in San Francisco.

| reply to kenneth11z I am sorry to hear about that. But "Tony" is nothing but rude person(I never call him engineer neither technician) 1st, he never listen what we say. 2ed, he believes no one knows DSL system but himself. 3ed, he doesn't have any commonsense how to deal customers. 4th, he never gives us any solution which works well. Overall I've never met this much horrible "Technical Manager" I will not say details but enough was enough. I am so tired to deal with Cyberonic. Since then I haven't called them at all. Even my ADSL speed was slow downed to 300/150 which is quarter of it used to be.

| reply to kenneth11z tangtang98, thanks for sharing your experience. I'm going to start a new topic and have everyone else share their experience with their technicual support and then I will forward this link to their executive and operation manager. So guys... If you can copy and paste what you have posted recently to the new topic, I would really appreciated. Let's do this collective and maybe we will get some positive response from them. I bet the top executives don't even know about this. We'll see....
Tangtang98, can you repost your in the new topic? Thanks.
