Re: Outbound Firewall Only?

Kerio... any rules based basic packet filter not preconfigured with implicit rules...

But I still run a few backup rules. Firewalls generally aren't rendered any heavier or lighter on resources by having limited rulesets, at least as a rule. Kerio 2.x, for example, one of the lightest weight of all mainstream firewalls, weighs in at about 5.2m peak memory with no rules but the initial defaults, and around 5.2 megs with my somewhat large ruleset... and consumes virtually no processor time at all on a modern P3 or 4 processor...

However, if what you really want's just outbound annd roll your own ruleset, then any completely rules based basic packet filter, like Kerio 2.1.5, is what you would probably be most comfortable with...

There is nothing wrong with having a hardware firewall and a software firewall set to both filtering inbound; layered security is the way to go. Firewalls like ZoneAlarm Free are very easy to set up and filter inbound and outbound. The only thing we don't recommend is rulling 2 software firewalls simultaneously, as they can conflict.

If you really want outbound only, then you could try Kerio 2.1.5, and make a rule to allow ALL inbound, and just create outbound rules. Although, because it is rule based it can be a little trickier to set up, especially if you are unsure exactly how the internet works. But I still think it would be fairly easy to cope with.

Hope that helps

I have a 2 wire hardware firewall and since you need an inbound as well as an outbound firewall are there any outbound firewalls out there that you can set to filter outbound trafic only?
