 | OK.. I'm stumped! Just peeked at an article on ZDnet, and noticed an ad. Thought to myself.. "SELF! How can this be?!" And I went to diggin'. The ad came from ad3.zdnet.com and I went to my handy dandy hosts file. Guess what. It was already listed. HUH?! How are they getting around this?

| The ad I saw on that page came from: images.zdnet.com/adverts/imp/
Or... at least a think it was. It had this up top: »images.zdnet.com/adverts/imp/adv···stat.gif
This site was not on my Hosts list. [text was edited by author 2001-05-17 16:57:15] |

|
 | Yup.. Typo in the post.. ads3.zdnet.com is the correct entry in the Hosts file. The question remains. How did they get around the Hosts file? -- "Rome did not create a great empire by having meetings. They did it by killing all those who opposed them."

R2R NotPremium,MVM join:2000-09-18 Long Beach, CA kudos:1 | OK, now THAT is weird!:) I see NO ad coming from ads3.zdnet. I went back and forth to that site several times. Instead, I see an ad from images.zdnet.com/adverts/imp -- and if I add that address to my Hosts file, I get the little eDexter image -- as above. |
|
 | reply to wheelert$93 IE seems to ignore the hosts file if you are connecting using a proxy. I've been very confused some times before I understood this. But that might not have anything to do with your problem... |
|
 | Proxy?! ACK! Not on THIS machine! That's the thing that has me very confused. Normally, the hosts file works very well. But apparently not this time. -- "Rome did not create a great empire by having meetings. They did it by killing all those who opposed them."
|
|
 | And if you traceroute the in-hosts-but-not-working domain, where does it end? |
|
 | That little sucker routes properly right to 127.0.0.1. My head hurts... |
|
 | Have you tried with another browser than IE? This is really weird...but as soon as you realize why this happens, you will probably knock your head in the wall |
|
 | Does the same thing with Opera.. Gonna reboot. Something isn't right here. |
|

| No dice.. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr....
Something is seriously wrong... Just went and checked the cookie list. There are many cookies that should have been blocked. Time to start digging.. **sigh** [text was edited by author 2001-05-17 17:56:27] |

 | Ok, now I have been trying to dig this mess. It's late here (23.56) so I might have missed something, but let me try anyway
The article http://www.zdnet.com/zdnn/stories/news/0,4586,5083035,00.html?chkpt=zdhpnews01 has an IFRAME pointing to http://www.zdnet.com/fcgi- bin/becky/ifc/RGROUP=r1936/CREATIVE=a63545 You can find it in the source near "<!-- Rebecca e43:10228 -->"
This page contains only one reference to ads3, which is a link if you click some button. All the graphics is fetched from the host home.cnet.com/Ads/Media/Flash/morgan/mplus/02122001/1/morgan_00.swf?r1=http§://ads3.zdnet.com/c/g%3dr1936%26c%3da63545/&r2=http§://chkpt.zdnet.com/chkpt/adv.cr.sc.a63545. which, if read in its whole, is just a redirection to ads3. Your computer is not actually in contact with ads3 but with home.cnet.com (the "§" in the http-part is just to make sure the address is not converted to a link)
So, correct me if I'm completely wrong (and I might be at this time, been a tough day), but your hosts-block does not apply to this ad. |
|
 | Hmmmmmmmmm. You may be on to something here. The actual ad is coming from a different source, yet if you click the ad, it points to someplace different? **sigh** The blood content in my alcohol is too high.. Good place to start digging and figure out what the heck is going on. Thanks. -- "Rome did not create a great empire by having meetings. They did it by killing all those who opposed them."

127.0.0.1 images.zdnet.com/adverts/imp I have no idea what ad you are seeing, but recommend adding that line to your Hosts file. Good luck, wheelert. |

 | reply to wheelert$93 Re-direct ?....nahhh....Shirley not ZDNET |
|
 | reply to R2 Sorry, but 127.0.0.1 images.zdnet.com still gives me a banner. It might work if you have not enabled IFRAME-support or if you have a non-IF compatible browser. The only way I've found so far is to se 127.0.0.1 creative.zdnet.com That disables their JavaScript, which is required to run the banner. I'm not sure if that makes other features on the site inaccessible.
Time for bed here in Sweden. Back tomorrow to see if you have solved the case! Good luck! -- "Internet is just a fad" Swedish minister of communications in 1995 |

I just added that too...just the "images.zdnet.com/adverts/imp"...not the rest of the URL. Adding the rest of the URL, which I did the first time, only blocked that specific ad. Adding just the root of the URL did it to block all the ads sneaking on to that page. God bless 'em. They'll do anything to make life interesting. Thanks, R2
OK. Now I am stumped too! A second ago, I clicked onto »www.zdnet.com/zdnn/stories/news/···hpnews01, and I got my lovely red X. Now I just tried it again, and darned if there wasn't another ad there. This is really weird. It comes and it goes. I also clicked onto it one time and found no ad at all nor any sign of it, and so doing it again, there it was. S'plain Lucy, s'plain!

R2R NotPremium,MVM join:2000-09-18 Long Beach, CA kudos:1 | reply to wheelert$93 OK, I remain confused. I went back to the web site and there was a NEW banner ad up top (not where the other window was) -- but it WAS being blocked by my Hosts file. This was the address:
ads3.zdnet.com/i/g=r017&c=a64044&idx=2001.05.17.18.26.46/http://images.zdnet.com/adverts/imp/c21066/banner2.gif
Notice the "ads3" AND the "images" address. I suspect the latter entry is blocking it. |
