Houston Road Runner... High Pings Again##&&@@

All RR techs on deck... last three nights in the sugar land area of houston - pings in the 80 to 130 mls range. Normally pings are around 7 to 40. Anyone else seen this?

I'm out...

Where are you pinging too? If you are pinging to New York or San Francsico from Houston, 80ms is pretty much what you can expect of course because of phyiscal cable distance and such.

Post a ping result, and a traceroute maybe?

Hi I live in houstonand have recentely run in to this problem also. I rent a gaming server in NYC and always pinged no more than 60 and now my ping is over 100. And I even tried pinging my server providers house which is in Albany, NY 150mi north of my servers location and pinged my normal 60 but to the gaming server my tracert says i'm being routed to PHO and LA and I end up with the 100 to 120 ping which I cant play with since the other people in my gaming community get between 20 and 60 pings! This started 3 days ago and I wondering what changed? Please help

Re: Houston Road Runner... High Pings Again##&&@@

Ran into this problem on the east coast last year....routed from NY to LA, back to NY again.

Roadrunner runs over the AOL Data Transit Network, and we were all seeing 100ms pings for about four months. I think in the end it was a borked router.....

It happened again later but ended in about a week. This might pass on its own if they've just got some network hardware issues.

Best you can do is call to report it. Roadrunner says they have no control over ADTN, and ADTN as an organization is about as consumer accessible as the President....

If it's all of Houston, best you can do is complain en masse.

I am having the same problem in The Woodlands. My team's Spearhead server is in Dallas, and my pings are now 95-150 vs. 30-50.

A guy on our team in Austin is having the problem with RR

Perhaps you can do a traceroute and see how your data is routed. If a gaming server is in NYC, and you are in Houston, and your route is routed through Los Angeles, yeah, you are going to have a ping of 120ms or more.

Roadrunner needs to fix them routers then Perhaps you could post a traceroute so we can analyze a bit.....

Re: Houston Road Runner... High Pings Again##&&@@

Like I said above, if it's ATDN there isn't much you can do other than call Roadrunner to complain and hope they inform ATDN that they've got a hosed router, which they're already probably aware of....

These problems usually resolve themselves over time after time.

Sorry. It pissed me off too when I went through it. I tried like a mad fool to find some kind of way to get answers from ATDN, and would have had an easier time bringing Princess Diana back to life with a spoon and some tin foil.

That's one thing you can be sure of, they knew about the problem long before any users noticed it. They surely have monitoring in place with much different thresholds that we're used to dealing with. I mean, we could see a 10ms increase and not get worried, but they might see a 1ms increase and know something's going wrong.

Can you tell me why I do not have the normal route up the east coast like I do with every other ip in NY. It is only this one ip that I'm being routed to pho. and LA. first causing 50more ms?? PLEASE HELP OR TELL ME WHO CAN?

Because Global Crossing announces that route to us. Our closest peering to Global Crossing is in LA.

Um, ever had 22-minute pings on RoadRunner? That's what I got. You're probably better off with a direct-connection (DSL or so). Got a time? Because: Cable gets truly congested at certain peak times.

EDIT: If you are wondering why I'm commenting about RoadRunner, I'm a past-customer.

I am having the same problem here in Missouri City (near Sugar Land). I play Diablo II on battlenet. Earlier in November, my connection was consistently excellent. Sometime around Thanksgiving, I started having lost packets and very poor response times. It causes me to lag badly in games, even when I am playing alone.

Road Runner of course says that it is my setup, when in fact nothing has changed on my end.

I cannot get DSL in my area, so it looks like I am stuck with this problem.

That ping used to be under 20ms. Im play games online. Once you get on the servers and play pings jump to like 160 ingame. From what used to be 60-110 at most. I was informed by them that that tracert looks good and is ok. There is nothing they can do. With that kind of performance im moven to the cheaper dsl. I can get just as good or better with dsl for a cheaper price. RR Houston is unwilling to adress the issue with atdn aol.

Eeee.. very bad Ping Times. If you are Recving heavy amounts of Packets Loss(no matter what you ping), or notice that at times you have a slow internet connection(accessing urls) then you should call your office and possibly have a ping Test Scheduled by L3.

Note:My local office has the capability to do 24-48HR ping test but yours may not. You may need to speak directly to L3 to get a definitive answer..

Thanks, James.

All good for now. However, I know every few months there will be a ATDN fubared router somewhere on the network that will affect myself, and I'm sure, a host of other users. Such is technology I guess.

Thanks for the tips.

I'm out-

But then I'm on SBC DSL, too. There's more to this stuff than speed alone... that's why I left TWC. They couldn't get it fixed while I was a customer... hope it works out for you guys.

Internet connections speed in Pearland TX for RR are way down, going up and slowing to a halt randomly. Where did the speed go?

2003-11-29 22:09:10 EST: 2973 / 366
Your download speed : 2973843 bps, or 2973 kbps.
A 363 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 366905 bps, or 366 kbps.
Seems like broadband .. above the 1mbit barrier!

I live in Pearland sliver lake area and my speed is down a little just under 3000 but still running great no big deal here.

Speed test was done at Http://hou.speakeasy.net at 9.10 Pm sat night

Yep, Copperfield area of Houston here. Games UNPLAYABLE due to high ping but mainly packet loss! I'm at the end of my rope with this.

SBC is sounding pretty nice right about now. I'd be better off with a 56K than this current RR connection anyway. I'm even experiencing this with a game server located in Dallas.

Lol, I'm pretty glad I didn't get roadrunner now. :| I'm over by Pearland Highschool, alot of my friends are having these same issues with RR, Packetloss/Routing problems/etc.

well Papillon. Having same problem here. Been good for some time. Love how you pay for business class service and pings are terrible.

I do hope they find the problem. I have alerted RR tier 3 for the past month that there was an issue.

Not surprising. You do not go through the hou/atdn pop.

When I called Tier 3 support, they tried to tell me the entire internet is having problems. Funny how all my contacts in other cities are having no problems?

You pay for business class service and expect a better response then "Then entire internet is this way". Who are they fooling?

First thing tomorrow I make a verbal complaint with the Tier three supervisor. If that doesn't work, then I'll take it to Cleon Smith!

Hey Quib,

Good to see you post on the issue. I know you have got some 'pull' at the RR tier 3 office. I provided all types of data indicating the problem was upstream on a RR/ATDN network, but no one acted on the information. If management had acted on data provided they may have averted last nights outage, avoided costly overtime, and possibly, refunds to customers.
