Re: TechNet Broken? (Win98SE + new update)

R2:

I have no problem at technet on W98SE but I do have the problem with scrolling. Maybe the problem at technet only affects IE6? I have IE5.5SP2.

Antiserious says:

> I suspect we'll see more and more problems soon enough ... guess it's time to learn linux, cuz I'm gonna resist XP as long as I can .

Yeh...you do that. I have had nothing but problems since I got a new box with XP Pro. It is a huge myth that XP is better than W98SE. I have spent most of my time uninstalling all the garbage that is on XP and turning off most of the rest of the services. All junk. XP doesn't boot any faster than my 98SE and it is on a 3GHz 1024RAM system. Plus, I have had to reboot XP a great deal more than I ever had to do with W98SE.
I'll take the resources problem in W98 any day over the numerous problems I have encountered in just a few days with XP.

The only thing more amazing than the continued operation of this Win98SE PC is that I paid for this abominable software in the first place.

I get none of the problems reported by others in this thread.

A little patchy history . . .

no problem with technet using 98se w ie 5.5 sp2 with the nov. patch!

no problems with 98se w ie6 sp1 with the nov. patch

never had a scroll problem!

wait sometimes i can not see scroll bars at winupdate and the download catalog but that is just because Ie's text size is too big

I have found that when going to those sites text size needs to be at "smallest"

however at technet, text size does not seem to matter.

with the other ms sites (win update and the download catalog) you will have display problems if you are not close to(or right at) default settings in these areas

display properties>appearance tab> message box text size.
display properties>settings tab>advanced>display text size

hope this helps.

btw what exactly is the scroll problem?
cant see the scroll bars?

I wasn't going to answer or reply to your post, but someone could actually get hurt reading your posts... and there is no "LOL" after that statement...

How much did you modify your brand new XP computer after you got it? Beyond the "Norm" even for us Security buff's at DSLR? I believe I read somewhere you intended to make "26 pages" of modifications to XP Pro..Would THAT have something to do with your problems with XP Pro? Can you start a new thread and tell us your problems under the M$ or Software forum? The reason I am answering this is because I am SO worried someone will actually misinterpret your numerous statements and wind up messing their system...Nothing personal, but I have been using XP Pro over a year now, and I have no problems... Sure, you've got to keep it patched and updated...that's a fact of life.. and I didn't even get infected with Blaster.. Patches, a router, a couple of security programs, a couple of small modifications.. that's all...

whitefishdj - could you add the SMALL HTML tag before that long list? It would make the page easier to read on these old cranky Win98 box. Yes, using Win98 is kinda like those guys that work on old classic cars, isn't it?

Nam Vet - check out the long Update thread to read about the Scrollbar issue. It basically involves three things:

•Clicking the 'open space' on the scroll bar now makes it jump further than expected. ALL other MS products simply move down one page. Now, what I believe I am seeing is that IE uses the position at which you click the scrollbar to determine how far to jump. This would be akin to clicking "Scroll Here" on the Scrollbar Context Menu.

So, in my assessment, MS modified the behavior of the Scrollbar so that the Default "onclick()" behavior is "Scroll Here" and not "Page Down". This is annoying because this breaks the tradition that has been in place for years and still exists on all other MS products.:(

•The Scrollbar Context Menu (something most of us never knew existed) now works very erratically -- to the point where I feel it is not usable at all.

•You can no longer select text and then use to scroll bar to move the page. Whenever you click the scrollbar, the selected text is immediately un-selected. This is also new behavior that is unique to the newly-patched IE.:(

Windows ME, with the patch applied, same context menu problem with scroll bar, and same error message at TechNet page. I am really looking forward to the patch of the patch!

fwiw in reguards to #1
it does not do this with ie 5.5 sp2(all patched) neither before or after the november patch.

on my 98se ie6 sp1 machine I noticed this behavior before the november patch!

#2 is ok on both

#3 is ok with ie5.5
but selected text is un-selected when scrolling with ie 6
(I dont know if this happened before the nov patch or not)

on the ie6 box clicking as fast as i can results in winding up at the same place as hitting the keyboard "pagedown" twice.

OK, I fixed the scrollbar problem -- completely -- by switching out the MSHTML.DLL file. I switched this file:

6.0.2800.1276 10/16/03 1:34 PM 2,734 MB

...in place of this file:

6.0.2734.1600 10/16/03 4:31 PM 2,699 MB

Both of these files were released with the new patch. The newer version (based on time) is the one that breaks the Scrollbar. However, it is the older version based on the Version numbers. Some users got the first and some got the second. I am fairly certain this is correct and the source of the inconsistency we are seeing.

It would never hurt to have more data points. Can you all tell me:

1) If you have the Scrollbar problem
2) The version of MSHTML.DLL on your box.

Any help is appreciated.

Interesting observation R2 See Profile. I do not have the scroll bar problem and I am using 6.0.2800.1276 10/16/03 1:34 PM 2,734 MB.

I have WinXP and version of the mshtml.dll file in C:\Windows\System32 is 6.0.2800.1276 dated 16.10.2003, 13:40:46. There is one more mshtml.dll file in C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386, which has version number 6.0.2800.1106. But this file is not being used, just a remnant from WinXP SP1 and is dated 20.9.2002, 17:04:14.
And yes, I have the scrollbar problem.. Hope this helps.

That is still OK -- you don't have the BAD file -- 6.0.2734.1600 appears to be the Scrollbar-breaking file. As long as you have any other version, you are probably fine...

My MSHTML.DLL Properties Sheet
1) "If you have the Scrollbar problem" - YES
2) "The version of MSHTML.DLL on your box" - see pic.

The version shown in my MSHTML.DLL Properties Sheet is the only copy of MSHTML.DLL I have -- in my System32 folder.
