| MSN shutting down? Respond, please!!
I recently subscribed to MSN DSL via Qwest. I was supposed to recieve my modem on the 10th of November and that day came and past. I waited until Friday and finally called Qwest. They said that MSN had "Ran out of modems" but got the shipment in Thursday and I my account stated the my account with MSN was active and my modem should be here by no later then Friday of the following week. Well, I decided to call MSN about this and they told me they were no longer offering DSL service. I was a bit weary but my phone died and I called back, I got the same thing from 2 other reps. I called Qwest back then and asked them what was up, the person I talked to put his suprivsor on and he said he was completely unware of anything like that. The only thing that they have been notified of is the modem issue and possible downtime due to upgrading. He told me to wait until my modem arrived and see if I get service, if not, contact MSN. Does ANYONE know whats going on here? Please, /me wants dsl bad |

| This has been a source of confusion for many of us. I believe the way to think about it is that MSN provides a subscription service (as an ISP), and until now they have also provided the DSL service. They are trying to get out of the DSL business, and I think their intent is to have other DSL providers provide the DSL, and they would just provide the MSN service.
In your case (and in mine), they are now counting on Qwest to provide the actual DSL service (the modem, etc.), and MSN could remain your ISP. That is actually how most ISPs work through a DSL provider. You make an agreement with both the DSL provider (Qwest) and the ISP (for mail and an IP address). You should end up paying the same, and it would be going in part to Qwest and in part to MSN (just like it would have been anyway).
It sounds like Qwest just doesn't realize that in the new agreement with MSN, they need to provide a modem and probably the installation support that MSN had provided before.
I think you will be OK, but you'll need to get ahold of the right person/people at Qwest. The fact that MSN was changing their business model for DSL has been known for a while (most of us who are with Qwest got a letter from them some time ago).

| Yes, MSN cut its DSL service on Nov 12th, 2003. If you got an MSN notice letter, did it mention a year of free MSN software benefits? Mine did, but when I tried to verify it by phone they said it was contingent on switching the DSL to BellSouth. I wrote to MS Legal Dept and they backtracked and told me today they will give me the free year ($119 value). I have another DSL provider but I need my msn.com email address service. The whole thing sounded to me like an attempt to push dumped DSL customers to a more expensive provider (partner of MS). |

| reply to dysphunktion I spoke to a customer service rep for Qwest today, managed to get an upgrade to 640/256 through the promotion they're running, didn't cost me an extra penny.
Just for fun, I asked him what the deal was with MSN, were they dropping them - he said nothing was changing that he knew of, that Qwest & MSN had an agreement... however, while he seemed to know what he was talking about, who knows if he's privy to "What's going to happen next" info at the company - grapevine's non-withstanding. -- "Just beneath my skin, I'm screamin..."
