This is up on their web page. It will be interesting to see the response from any other Voip players.

Re: Unlimited International Calling from Packet8

Great news!

I am looking forward to the response from Vonage and others!

I am still surprised that while big VOIP players have talked to my company about getting local DIDs in Europe, none are offering this service to their customers yet.

I think Packet8's renewed attention to the non-US market is a step in the right direction!

Wow - this is great news!

I'll hold out for a bit to see if Vonage counters - this would make switching very attractive...

They also "forgot" India for same reason. Since they are the two most populated countries in the world, it seems like a rather large hole.

ok, i'm trying to get the rates for packet8 but they have me on hold on the phone (over 20 minutes) for sales. in addition, i go to 8x8.com and then click on the bottom left link for Packet8 IP Telephone service. This link takes me to packet8.net but that page doesn't come up. Are they having a problem or am I simply overlooking their rate plans??

Assuming what's been said here is correct, incoming VoIP calls to India POTS lines are illegal unless they enter the country on a POTS line (i.e. they are allowed to originate as a VoIP, but must enter the country via POTS). This makes calls to India a bit more expensive than, say, the UK or the US.

Note that you are allowed to terminate VoIP calls into India on a VoIP device (either an ATA or computer) as well as originate VoIP calls in India.

Now if Packet8 could just offer better rates to Mexico...

My regular phone line is at 18 cents a minute, my packet8 at 14 cents, but Vonage at an incredible 6 cents.

I still use packet8 instead of vonage for a number of reasons, but rates to Mexico isn't one of them.

Well my company already uses some Kall8 services so as an existing customer you might think we would be keen to use them for european numbers too.

We looked at Kall8's european numbers. Kall8 seem to be reselling your numbers at $28/month rental with a $50 setup fee ...... and they don't even support callerid.

To be blunt- that seems too much for too little.

We can have an 0845 UK number delivered VoIP to us in the US and we get full callerid. We also use a UK 0870 number delivered to us G711 VoIP, again with full callerid. If we wanted a geographic number it would be about $8/month plus bandwidth charges.

I don't know to what extent Kall8's pricing is a reflection of the deal they get from interlocal, but their current offerings are not particularly attractive.

In other words, India is trying to protect their regular phone companies, but carve an exception that helps their call center industry, but as little of the general population as is possib le.

Re: Unlimited International Calling from Packet8

Who is your provider of UK DIDs who can terminate to SIP? We setup a line, but are paying nine pounds a minute plus four pence a minute for incoming calls. I'd love to change. I've considered ICH's offering at $14 plus free incoming, but haven't done anything.

Is the company you are dealing with wholesale only?

Thanks

Something like that. It's nice to know political jockeying happens in every country...

Hey - I hope that isn't really 9 pounds / minute !!

You could prob get a UK 800 number (free for callers) routed to the US for a lower monthly fee and possibly a lower per minute rate too. Try emailing sales@uk.voicelynx.com . Either they will be able to help or point you at somebody who can.

Nine pounds a month! Sorry. Nine pounds a MONTH and 4p a minute. We also have an 0870 number terminating in the states (and one on my mobile), but those are free.

Re: Unlimited International Calling from P8

You are absolutely correct! "Asia" without China is a misnomer. For good or for bad, that is the reason I went with Vonage. $.05/minute to China is good for me.
