| Update on my wireless link to get broadband
I am in communication with cable company to get broadband to the business located at 440 St-Joseph O.
The cable company his curerrently servicing location at 66 rte 321 and the business has line of sight to that person's balcony. The business also owns a vacant lot next to 66 rte 321 but there is no power nor driveway.
Address 479 rg St.Joseph O. is servicable by the cable company but does not currently have cable. We do not have direct line of sight to that location (hill).
To bring a hard line from the junction of the 321 and the rg St.Joseph O. the cable company is quoting us for $12,000.
I have already ordered 2 D-Link 900AP+ and 2 14dbi external antennas. I am waiting to see what deal the business can make with the person located as 66 rte 321 and what costs the cable company would be charging for this custom setup. |

| Engeneer doing site visit this AM
The cable company just called and they are visiting the business for a follow up visit (possibly visit neighbour) this morning. The president of the business has already contacted the neighbour located at 66 rte 321 to have initial discussions. Things are looking promissing.
I'll keep you posted.

Location of entry point for Internet | Setup of the networking equipment |
The decision has been made. We are getting electricity installed on the vacant lot next to the neighbour in the above picture. I have configured the bridge and router, it's ready to go in. I hope to hear back from our cable company this week. We are going to build a steel box and insulate it. I am hoping that the heat generaged from the modem, AP and power supplies will be enough to keep it above zero degrees C. I figure if I make the box about 1 foot square and insulate it with 2" styrofoam I should be OK. A telephone pole is being installed to accomodate the power company's entry. We will mount the Modem, AP and power outlet on that same pole. |

@comcast.net | If your going to have electricity in the box just wire in a small light. Plenty of heat to keep it from freezing. |

| reply to vincent9993 Update: Field test and progress.
Last week we installed the pole. Getting the request for electricity was a little more demanding than anticipated. Hydro Quebec was not accepting the request from us directly, it needed to come from a certified electrician. We went to our electrician, and he could not put a request for us without a civic address! To make a lengthening story short, we now have a civic number for the pole.
We ended up purchasing a box, we got a deal on an outdoor silo controller box.
The cable company confirmed that they will be able to provide cable internet to that pole. Their cost is estimated at $3,000 but would be absorbed by them 100% with a 3 year contract. Of course we will make sure that in that contract, we will be able to move the connection closer should the cable eventually run directly to the business.
We field tested our D-Link 900AP+ and the 14dbi antennas on the property. Distance of final installation is estimated at 600 meters. The property of the business had a line of sight at 800 meters. We successfully connected and had a steady connection. At this point I do not have any means of measuring the throughput of the connection.
Cable company will be providing a 3.5M unlimited service. As long as the bridge can hold a constant speed of 5.5, we will be fine.
Because the modem and D-Link will be in a remote location (on the pole) about 8 feet up, and no real road access, resetting the equipment may prove to be problematic. I am considering putting the modem and D-Link on a timer that would turn of at midnight for say 2 minutes. This service will be used for business and their will be no need for night access. Any thoughts? |

I can't comment on the Cable Modem, but I have 2 DWL-900AP+ units installed in the field in simple "rainproof" electrical boxes. Both are on the top of flat roofed buildings with no real shelter beyond the steel box itself. They've been rock-solid for a few months now, and we don't do any sort of tricks to keep them alive. Winter is coming up, so I don't know how they will fare in the colder weather, but in my experience, electronics like cold, right? |

| reply to vincent9993 Update: Cable guy installed cable!
This morning the cable guy came knocking to the business' door to find out where to install the cable. We showed him the box in the telephone pole. Cable installed and modem connected. Next we need to align the antenas and finish connecting the connections. Looks like we will have BB for x-mas!!!
I'll keep you posted once I'm connected. |

 How does this look? |
I was hoping to have this setup before the end of the year but thinks are not looking good. My contact is away until the 5th of Jan.
I went out to our pole to check the modem status. Anyone care to comment on my signal quality?
At this point I need to have an account setup to activate the modem. |

| reply to vincent9993 other than the AccessDenied thing for the modem status, id say your upstream is rather high DOCSIS 1.0 limit is 53dBmV
(correct me if im wrong)
also i hope your wireless link goes very well, and welcome to the BB world!
(Also have a merry christmas!)

| reply to vincent9993 Looks like everything is good except for the denied message. 1.7 downstream is good. The upstream is on the high side but not bad and nothing to be worried about at this time. Get worried when you see 52 or 53 on the upstream. SNR looks great also. Sounds like the modem has been provisioned on the cable co's servers yet. Service might just be a phone call away. |

| reply to vincent9993 Eureka! Surfing tonight with new connection!
I finally have everything setup! Turns out that the building where the receiving antenna was being mounted has a great deal of interference. After 2 days of trying to lineup the antennas and building a rifle telescope on a bracket (picture to come) to try to get a signal. We ended up having to mount the AP and the antenna away outside and away from the building in order to get a connection.
Connection is good. I am getting a 3Mbps (of my 3.1Mbps service) I still need to get the E-Mail addresses' password and detail of the contract.
It's snowing tonight and the AP is hanging off the wall in a plastic bag. Next week, we will mount everything in a insulated box properly.
I'll try to take some pictures and post a wrap-up of this project. Thanks every one. |

Check any of the cable forums FAQs for signal level help, but I think yours are within spec. |

This morning I woke up to a broken bridge. I walked around the building and found that I was getting a great deal of inteference.

I'll start a different thread to talk about this but I am happy to report that I now have a strong link between my 2 DWL900AP+ and I am getting a 2Mbps internet connection. |

| Now what?
Had the setup working fine, then this week-end it died.
I could only attribute it to fog. But that was not the case. It looks like Point_A may have failled somehow. It started with a great deal of lost packets and now the bridge is completly down. When I setup the APs as Access Points I can pickup Point_B's signal at Point_A's location with my laptop and Orinoco card but I cannot pickup Point_A's signal at point_B.
When in bridge mode, Point_A sent opackets are all dropped.
I tried reloading firmware/resetting and re-config. Nothing worked. I am led to believe a faulty antenna could be the problem. I've got one on order.
Any other suggestions welcomed. Thanks |

Could just be the AP has gone bad. I had a Linksys WAP11 like that. One day the bridging part stopped doing it's job. You could configure it all day from the LAN web interface, diddle with firmware. I could associate with it, but it wouldn't pass any packets to the LAN. Dumped it and replaced. AP's are cheap enough to have a spare in case. |

1 edit | Could be humidity that went in the antenna!?
We had 3 raining days with high umidity levels. The AP is in a dry box but the antenna is exposed to the elements. The antenna is said to be an outdoor antenna: TRENDnet 14dBi Outdoor Directional Antenna But now that the temperature has gone down (way down: -39C) everything is back andworking. I did not change anything. I did order an extra AP and antenna as spares. If it starts acting up again we will try toreplace the antenna to pinpoint the problem.
If this stays up, we are getting 2,9Mbps down and 380K up. Very reasonable for us. We were getting 28.8K before! |

For those interested, here are 2 photos of point B's antenna. The connection has since been tapped up. |
