| new folder colors
If you are confused about the transition to new folder colors, please see the hint list at the bottom of a forum.
red = new topic orange = updates to a topic you have read white = no updates (entirely read) ribbon = followed topic lit background color = site "hot" topic
for half an hour, you may see things (colors) flip back and forth depending on which server you get.

I prefer seeing the lock.... JMO
(edit) Make that four locked topics.
(edit2) On locked topics, see last two days in above Forum, I see one back-lit icon and at least three that are not back-lit. No lock, just one back-lit.
(edit3) I see locks everywhere except on »AT&T Southeast.
(edit4) The first locked topic in »AT&T Southeast is Topic #62. There are at least 4 in the first 30 topics not seen.
(EDIT5) WOW... It's now fixed. Hope that's not a jinx..

1 edit | Hey the "it sucks" descriptions are always funny to read.
But if you stand a chance of influencing changes, you have to do better than that. It doesn't suck just because it has changed. Come up with a reasoned and constructive criticism, and provide an alternative vision, or don't waste time posting because then you sound like a whiner.
The fact is that people had been pointing out in the past lots of issues with the old scheme, and they were correct. This addresses those problems.
If you think this folder design is ugly, fair enough, then come up with a better one. If you want all states of a topic represented in one icon then you'll need to generate a WHOLE BUNCH of images:
locked vs unlocked hot vs not followed vs not followed new topic vs updated topic vs seen topic posted in vs not posted in
that is ... 2 x 2 x 2 x 3 x 2 = 48 different icons.
Come up with a self-consistent set of 48 different images, that look ok on both light colored forums and dark colored forums, and I'll use them! I'd be extremely glad to.

| Re: new folder colors said by login name : Just out of curiousity, what was the problem before?
no way to tell when a locked topic had been updated or was completely new.
no way to distinguish the difference between a new topic and one previously clicked, that had updates. (a very important distinction).
no indication of followed topics.
no way to tell whether a sticky had been updated, or was new (because there was only a single sticky gif for all reasons).
All these things have come up, at some stage or other, as criticisms, and they are all valid.
so what has changed, really:
For most forums, the ONLY difference is a color change on one folder, and the extra "lock" icon appearing on locked threads. Oh, plus the yellow ribbon appearing for "followed topics". (which I think is better than the "posted in" mark that illogically follows the topic title).
For a couple of popular social forums, the number of "hot topics" means a lot of topics get the folder cell background color addition, indicating 'hot topic'. I'm quite happy to do away with 'hot topic' notifications completely if you like, there are plenty of ways to see hot topics on the site already.

My .02...
Ah constructive criticism, thanks.
voted (topic voting) is back-lit, on the topic subject. At least, if the forum theme has not been edited by the mod to remove that.
I agree that "hot topic" is kind of redundant. I'd like to remove it. The 'red dot' is better to my eyes (not for black backgrounds yet, the gif still needs tuning) than a back-lite, but should be done away with completely if its still irritating to waste space indicating such things.

I vote to trash the red dot. I looks like a laser is aimed at the icon block. To much real estate wasted anyway. -- Dan

1 edit | I do not like most of the new changes:
1) All of the new icons and what they mean - I will never remember them.
2) Read threads are getting mixed in with threads that have NOT been updated.
3) On my Fav forums I would LOVE to see it go back to where all I could see are the threads I posted to that were updated and nothing else. Now they are mixed and I have to stop following them - I only have 17+ pages of followed threads - I am NOT going to go thru 17 pages hitting Stop on each one.
This is nearly as bad as trying to go thru 3 pages of Saved threads only to not have them unsave the first time.
If the format is going to be kept then we all need a mass 'upkeep' of the threads that are already marked.
Maybe doing the changes you have made in the last day or 2 slowly thru the week but I do not care for the changes at all. It is now more difficult to read the things I want to read while ignoring those thread that have not been updated... -- Brian

2. On what screen? are you seeing this, please post a screen shot and explanation.
3. Fav forums view (with topics shown) displays followed topics (ie: topics you have posted to and are updated) AND it displays new topics. It has always been so.
3a. Why are you going through 17+ pages of followed threads (presumably looking for updates) when there is a "updated followed" tab that just shows what you want?

| Re: new folder colors Read and unread together - mixed | Untidy Updated and followed |
2) Fav forums - mixed read and unread together when before it simply had all the updated unread threads (or new) and then all of the unread threads - now it is mixed.
3) It used to be you could have Updated posts in threads you responded to - nothing else. Nice and tidy - only ones that would stick around were sticky threads. As soon as I read all of the updated threads I posted to I would have NO threads listed till someone updated a thread I posted in. Nice and clean unlike the second pic which shows threads from July and August - stuff I had already read and have not been updated in a LONG time.
3a) Yes you are correct - I was mixing the 2. My apologies...:) -- Brian America's Army Forum Moderator and America's Army Beta Tester

No you are wrong, the topics were always ordered by time of last update. Just that all the folders were red. They are STILL ordered that way, but now you get to see additional info - orange means you read the topic before.

Just read them, (click blue arrows), and they will vanish for good. They are the residuals from moving 'site marked' topics to 'followed' topics.

You know better for #2 but it is highly irratating going from one color to another. The page is still way busier than it needs to be. Before I knoew what I read as well - by the pencil or notepad - a lot less intrusive and easier on the eyes and it was completely intuitive. 1 edit | Isn't putting a ribbon near an envelope redundant? I would imagine that for 99% of the people here, if you have posted in the thread, you would want it followed (makes sense).
Secondly, why put an envelope along with a lock icon? If the thread is locked, no one is posting to it anymore, so that will alleviate the need for showing any sort of envelope, right?

Because some threads are locked but kept updated by mods and so on. Not all locked threads are dead and static.

1 edit | Re: new folder colors Just giving my opinion here. As you can see by this screen cap, the forums are now quite the eye sore with so many icons.
1. I still don't see the purpose of including a locked icon next to an envelope. I have been around these parts for more than 3 years, and I have never noticed a locked thread that has been updated. If it was updated, what wast he purpose for it being locked. Defeats that purpose if you ask me.
2. ribbon next to envelopes. As it stands, the ribbon can mean two different things. One, it means that we have posted in the thread, which "naturally" would mean we want to follow it. Two, it means that it is a thread that we have followed, but not necessarily posted in. My problem is this. If I go in to a forum, I just like to casually glance at the threads and see which ones I have posted in. Sometimes I just like taking note as to how many views the thread has. If I search for ribbons, I am viewing threads that I have posted in, AND followed (without posting in). I think there definately needs to be a distinction between the two.
3. The little red dot in its own space has got to go. The site is starting to look like it was made for AOL with all the icons that are now popping up. -- Click Me I'm Deviant!|Click Me I'm Live!

Yes this is true, but I'm probably going to deal with this by REMOVING the posted-here icon. Why? because it never worked well, and it is not in a logical place. It never worked well because the memory was short-term. You could look back several pages and find the posted-here icons vanish, even though you did post in the topic.
