Re: 831 out-of-box config??

I would second drussel2's configuration for you - it contains the settings I had to make to get get access to my router after I tried to create a default config

If you havd some stuff in the config when you got it then it is possible you got a unit that may have been tested. Did you buy your router new or was it a refab?
A new Unit.

BTW I did a write erase on my own router to try your suggestion and a default config was created which did not allow me internet access or to even ping the router [I had to struggle to set up dchp settings (as I am a newbie at this) and to configure the interface(s) from down to up] - finally I set up the dchp server on the router so I could communicate with it, set the interfaces from down to up and I was able to tftp my saved config back to the router and get things back to normal. The config that comes shipped with the router is different than the default config created from a write erase - the out-of-box config it allows you to basically plug in the connections to the router and go, not have to get interfaces up and configure the dhcp server on the router.

But it was educational for me - I got to configure dchp on the router heh!

outofboxconfig.zip 572 bytes
basic 831 config
(outofboxconfig.txt)
See the attached file... plain text... note this is a very simple config and you will probably want to make changes after...

telnet to the router:
enable
copy ftp start
you'll be prompted for the ftp site/address/file name to load

once the new config is loaded, do a "reload"

After that you can make whatever changes you want... they only apply to the running config... they will be lost on a "reload" unless you do a "copy run start".

A good "trick". especially if you are playing with ACLs is to issue a "reload in 30" command and THEN do your exprimenting.... if you really messit up and end up locking yourself out of your own router, no worries... it will reload in 30 minutes, effectively undoing your changes.

The reason I ask is because I believe I did this once, and the "default" running-config that was created seemed minus a lot of the stuff in the config that came with the router out of the box.

All boxes I have gotten new have had no "extra" commands. If I were to do a write-erase then there would be no less info than from when it was new.

Later,
Jeff

What version of IOS are you running? I have two saved configs as listed in my previous post but they are not the exact out of box configs, as my original IOS out-of-box was 12.2.8 and I didn't save a config for this IOS version. I have configs for 12.2.13 and 12.3.4

If I understand correctly, the write erase command would erase the startup-config in NVRAM, and then, on reload, the IOS software image in flash would create a default running-config in SDRAM?

The reason I ask is because I believe I did this once, and the "default" running-config that was created seemed minus a lot of the stuff in the config that came with the router out of the box.

I mention this because I have a saved running-config for 12.2(13) and also for 12.3.4 for the Cisco 831 router - I don't know if it would help or hurt if mhendren attempted to run it. If he took one of my configs, couldn't he do a copy tftp running-config and wouldn't this parse/merge the two running-config's and reject any erroneous commands in my config file and leave him with a good running-config?

Copy your current config into a notepad, then do a write erase and reload, the default config will then be there.

This is assuming you have console access.

Does anyone happen to have the out-of-box configuration for the Cisco 831 (the config already loaded onto the router when you buy it new)?? I'm in need of it and forgot to back it up. Thanks in advance.
