wow going to shiz

Is it just my line or is everyone experiencing problems with there wow just being pure shit lately. pardon my language but i am very FED up over this company right now.

Webpages are taking minutes instead of seconds to load, AIM takes a couple mins to send and recieve IM's and view profiles. Its not like i download much so i know i am not using to much bandwidth so they limit me, and all i really do is look up webpages.

Its just very frustrating when i come home and the modem light is just blinking because there is no connection. And then i finally get one and its dropped 3 minutes later. I am near the end of my rope with wow and there whole shit internet lately. Especially over the fact that they cant even get their servers to work correctly to give us people who pay 80$ a month for 4mbps service and only get 2.8-3mbps.

- So in conclusion, if anyone else is having these problems, respond to this thread, bc im sure people from WOW look at these forums to see how their doing and look for stuff they can do better! so lets let them know what we feel about their service.

Dont get my wrong thoguh, i have been a loyal customer since day 1 with wow and their internet. I was in fact one of the first to get there cable modem in Naperville area. And never had problems till the last 3 weeks to 1 month.

Re: wow going to shiz

Naperville from what I hear is a pretty shitty system, so I understand where you are coming from. I would fire off a few emails to the top people over at WOW and see what they can do, the just recently fixed an issue pretty quickly a few days back so it might not be that bad of an idea.

Re: wow going to shiz

I've sent e-mails to 2 of the top people from IL as i recall ... getting the e-mails strait from their webpage. They both sent me back e-mails saying "its being worked on" and "we have a window on dec 01 to work on it" so if its not clean and fast and nice again by dec 01 im really letting them have it. I mean its unexceptable to have a shitty network and then charge people up the ass for speed u cant even come close to promising.

Take a gander at the people in the Comcast forums and you will see that even the Comcast Chicago systems are very problematic, and WOW does not charge as much as Comcast does, so they are really getting screwed. Fixing network problems takes time to find the problem and them find the fix. It can take weeks to months to fix some issues, that is the nature of the cable beast. And if its and ingress/noise issue that is very tough to find. They would have to disconnect everyone from each segment, trap off the network then look to see if the plant itself has noise, if it doesn't then its a customer causing the problem from crappy house wiring which will require WOW to come out and fix.

Re: wow going to shiz

The Comcast systems were initially based off of the old Jones systems (I know they rewired, etc.) so Comcast I don't think makes it an apples to apples in this case.

I would have hoped that the WOW network, based on similar Americast setups across their network would be somewhat more consistent when it comes to noise, levels, etc.

The tech had mentioned (for what it's worth) that the entire Naperville network is noisy.

Re: wow going to shiz

Just because Ameritech built all systems does not mean anything. They are separate plants, thus will have their own problems. Its all in the way the system is maintained, and it sounds like the IL and OH systems have a problem maintaining the networks, while Michigan(WOWs largest system) is maintained properly.

Re: wow going to shiz

Comparing to Comcast also meant nothing.

Please don't treat me like I'm clueless about cable. You really don't have to explain to me how any of this stuff works. I spent several years working with inventors at GI/Motorola in advanced development of cable technologies (look at some of the latest Motorola patents and there are others still not published or issued), so I understand plant issues etc.

My main point was that I would have hoped that WOW would have maintained similar operating standards across all their networks. I wasn't trying to engage in a technical discussion.

Can you tell me what emails you wrote to. I'll send a message also. I haven't had the bad speeds you're reporting, but I don't get as fast as speeds as I see reported from non-Naperville people.

Sometimes I wonder if we hadn't been the first to get WOW if our system would have been better. On the other hand, Arlington Heights I believe was one of the first communities that got Americast when they came on the scene and it looks like their problems are fixed.

Maybe there's hope for Naperville.

Not to fuel any fires, but i'm in Naperville and been having no probs. I did see slow-downs a few weeks ago, but after doing some troubleshooting I realized the problem was on my end (wireless router causing big slowdowns on downstream pipe, taking my 2Mb down to 200K. Reflashed router, played with some settings, been at 2.1Mb ever since on Advanced)

Just throwing that in there to make the claim that not all of this area seems to be in trouble.

Have had no disconnects and running full speed with the exception as noted due to probs on my end.

Ditto on that. No problems on Advanced. No gain by eliminating the router either.

I've noticed maybe a gain of 100-200kb. . . but that could also be the time of day i did the test compared to the normal time of day i do it.

I am going to e-mail them back after i get home tonight and find out for sure there was no improvment and see what the guy has to say.

I assume you reset the modem and all that good crap.

100-200Kb is meaningless really. Time of day, congestion, blah, blah, blah. It looks like nothing really changed.

I guess I'll find out this evening when I get home.

Re: wow going to shiz

No change at all. I responded in the other thread. This is what I said:

I got squat in Naperville. And--in reference to another posting by mnhall--I have great signal levels after WOW came out and did some work at my place a while ago to fix my sync-loss woes. Made/makes no difference to my speed. I'm testing at between 2900 and 3200.

Awesome. I had done the "unplug the modem" thing, but didn't see a change. So tonight I'll follow your procedure. I'm hoping that will do it. Otherwise, I guess I'll have to get off my lazy butt (figuratively speaking I suppose) and pursue this.

If your download is that close to 4300 and your upload is over 100k off, try tweaking with Dr. TCP. Set your RWIN to 32120 (I get 4300 / 530 with this RWIN), or something else around there.

thanks, ill try that setting you just suggested and report back!

but ... there is like 100 differnt options in Dr.TCP **not litterally** and im not sure waht to set them all at, so ill post what i have and maybe if someone knows what tehy mean they can tell me if there good or not.

Ok here it goes

Tcp Recieve Window: 32120
Window Scaling: No
Time Stamping: No
Selective Acks: No
Path MTU Discovery: No
Black Hole Detection: No
Max. Duplicate ACK's: BLANK
TTL: BLANK
MTU: BLANK

Thanks guys!

A 461 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 526038 bps, or 526 kbps.

the download is still the same, but the upload is back to normal, haha. I turned on like 2 things.

the Selective ACK's is on and the Path MTU Discovery is Yes too now.

But i think the RWIN could still be better for a better upload. not sure. any suggestions welcome, thanks.

Alright, ran a test from another computer and got these results.

2003-12-04 21:27:40 Speed test @ chi.speakeasy.net 4583/525 kbps

2003-12-04 21:26:54 Speed test @ chi.speakeasy.net 4650/445 kbps

this was when the modem was directly plugged in to that computer. All i can say is DAMN! its fast as hell on that computer, so now i know its my computer and not the line.

Well right there is the problem.;) j/k. Sony is notorious for having old/crappy drives installed on their computers. Did you check for the latest and greatest drivers for your NIC. Also you may want to try adding a new one in the machine, since probably its a built in one, and sometimes they just are flaky.
mnhall

actually the NIC i was using was a NetGear one, not the built in one. and it had the up-to-date drivers for it.

You might take a look to see what other programs are running on both computers and compare them. For example, I can repeatably influence speed test results on my setup by disabling NIS 2004.

That might be a problem on a case-by-case basis, but I think it's pretty clear that on the whole the Michigan folks and other non-Naperville communities are clearly and consistently measuring higher throughputs (except for very fortunate mnhall)

i havnt been back to these forums in about a month and now after putting up with their sort of glass ceiling "3mbit" limit on the ultra package i am going to try to steps that you suggested, i was just running emule so in about 20-30 minutes i will run a bandwidth test after unpluging and reseting my modem and router. hopefully this will solve all of my issues.

thanks guys!

Re: wow going to shiz

Just so you know, I have had WoW in Naperville for awhile, and I have run into tons of problems, I sometimes take the router out and hook up directly just to make sure it is not the router, sometimes it is weird, I come at home and the speeds are very slow (I'd say 300/300) and I am at Advanced, I turn off the cable modem, pc. Turn on Cable modem, then PC and everything goes back to normal.

Couple weeks ago, I talked to a Tech who worked at WoW and now has moved on into better job, he told me that the homes in the north Naperville (North of N Aurora, East of 59) have a lot of problems compare to homes in downtown Naperville or south of Naperville. He said this has to do mainly because of noise. Also he said this is also caused because we're very close to their Center which I assume is someplace close by Diehl road. He said, they do fine tune their system at the center all the time, noise checks (whatever it means), but sometimes by calling people to come to your house and check the cable box it could help.

He also said these things usually happen when they do add nodes, I assume couple months ago they upgraded to couple more DS3's ?

Anyways, good luck... I just have come to the habits of turning off/on cable modem when I get home from work, but sometimes it gets frustrating, though I can't complain about the combo tv deal and 2M/300K

well im right near downtown naperville and i have had alot of problems too, it took me 3 months to get my signal issues fixed. i just ran a bandwith test and im still not gettin my 4mbits, even after rebooting modem and bypasing router, im still at 3500-3600 down. this is what i really dont understand, my upload, is always perfect, no matter how shitty my download is, every test i have in my bandwitdh history read at over 530kb upload, and my download goes anywhere from 120-3600. but w/e i guess i am satisfied with a 3600 down connection.
