said by mnhall : I got an e-mail from the guy I've been talking to about this whole problem. He told me to unplug modem, turn off pc, plug in modem, let it power up.
Then power up the pc again... i did and look at my speed now!
2003-12-04 17:40:02 EST: 3955 / 385 Your download speed : 3955106 bps, or 3955 kbps. A 482.8 KB/sec transfer rate. Your upload speed : 385505 bps, or 385 kbps. Seems like broadband .. above the 1mbit barrier!
only 200k below cap, i mean its literally right at 4megs now. so try that goober and we will see what happens with u.
Awesome. I had done the "unplug the modem" thing, but didn't see a change. So tonight I'll follow your procedure. I'm hoping that will do it. Otherwise, I guess I'll have to get off my lazy butt (figuratively speaking I suppose) and pursue this. |

| reply to mnhall Ok, i did some tweaking and this it what i came up with
2003-12-04 20:11:06 EST: 3776 / 526 Your download speed : 3776972 bps, or 3776 kbps. A 461 KB/sec transfer rate. Your upload speed : 526038 bps, or 526 kbps. Seems like broadband .. above the 1mbit barrier!
the download is still the same, but the upload is back to normal, haha. I turned on like 2 things.
the Selective ACK's is on and the Path MTU Discovery is Yes too now.
But i think the RWIN could still be better for a better upload. not sure. any suggestions welcome, thanks. |

| reply to mnhall Alright, ran a test from another computer and got these results.
2003-12-04 21:27:40 Speed test @ chi.speakeasy.net 4583/525 kbps
2003-12-04 21:26:54 Speed test @ chi.speakeasy.net 4650/445 kbps
this was when the modem was directly plugged in to that computer. All i can say is DAMN! its fast as hell on that computer, so now i know its my computer and not the line. |

At least there's one Naperville person to whom I can point when taking this up with WOW. |

| reply to mnhall well goob, i wish you the best of luck. It seems like sometimes it doesnt work on one pc but flys on another. I cant for the life of me figure out why it sucks on a 2,000$ sony vaio but rocks on a crap compaq that is mostly made by me like 3 years ago.
Im not sure how that works out but it does. so any who, just keep trying and playing around with it and im sure u will get it to work sometime soon. |

Well right there is the problem.;) j/k. Sony is notorious for having old/crappy drives installed on their computers. Did you check for the latest and greatest drivers for your NIC. Also you may want to try adding a new one in the machine, since probably its a built in one, and sometimes they just are flaky. |

| reply to mnhall i havnt been back to these forums in about a month and now after putting up with their sort of glass ceiling "3mbit" limit on the ultra package i am going to try to steps that you suggested, i was just running emule so in about 20-30 minutes i will run a bandwidth test after unpluging and reseting my modem and router. hopefully this will solve all of my issues.
thanks guys! |

| Just so you know, I have had WoW in Naperville for awhile, and I have run into tons of problems, I sometimes take the router out and hook up directly just to make sure it is not the router, sometimes it is weird, I come at home and the speeds are very slow (I'd say 300/300) and I am at Advanced, I turn off the cable modem, pc. Turn on Cable modem, then PC and everything goes back to normal.
Couple weeks ago, I talked to a Tech who worked at WoW and now has moved on into better job, he told me that the homes in the north Naperville (North of N Aurora, East of 59) have a lot of problems compare to homes in downtown Naperville or south of Naperville. He said this has to do mainly because of noise. Also he said this is also caused because we're very close to their Center which I assume is someplace close by Diehl road. He said, they do fine tune their system at the center all the time, noise checks (whatever it means), but sometimes by calling people to come to your house and check the cable box it could help.
He also said these things usually happen when they do add nodes, I assume couple months ago they upgraded to couple more DS3's ?
Anyways, good luck... I just have come to the habits of turning off/on cable modem when I get home from work, but sometimes it gets frustrating, though I can't complain about the combo tv deal and 2M/300K

| reply to mnhall well im right near downtown naperville and i have had alot of problems too, it took me 3 months to get my signal issues fixed. i just ran a bandwith test and im still not gettin my 4mbits, even after rebooting modem and bypasing router, im still at 3500-3600 down. this is what i really dont understand, my upload, is always perfect, no matter how shitty my download is, every test i have in my bandwitdh history read at over 530kb upload, and my download goes anywhere from 120-3600. but w/e i guess i am satisfied with a 3600 down connection. |
