You might take a look to see what other programs are running on both computers and compare them. For example, I can repeatably influence speed test results on my setup by disabling NIS 2004.

That might be a problem on a case-by-case basis, but I think it's pretty clear that on the whole the Michigan folks and other non-Naperville communities are clearly and consistently measuring higher throughputs (except for very fortunate mnhall)

No argument there. I was trying to offer up suggestions for things to look at to explain why performance was better on one of his computers than the other.

Oh yeah, I agree. That's one of the things that needs to be checked in any speed issue inquiry.

Goober, you experience any changes in speed lately? I am curious on why you arent getting your 4.0 speed.

2003-12-10 18:37:06 EST: 4411 / 537
Your download speed : 4411073 bps, or 4411 kbps.
A 538.4 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 537827 bps, or 537 kbps.
Seems like broadband .. above the 1mbit barrier!

That is just a speed test i did just like 3 minutes ago ** 540pm** and the speeds are very very nice for me and i am in naperville. You may want to send someone high up at WOW an e-mail, whenever i have problems that is what i do and they fix them right away! i mean, my problem was like for 10 days and fixed. well 2 days after they were supposed to fix everything anyway.

I am kind of tired and not sure if that made any sense. but try to e-mail them!

Yeah, I will try again sometime soon. End of year is keeping me too bust to experiment. If I don't get the 4 eventually, I'll be asking WOW to give me Comcast prices (or I'll move over if they are cheaper).

If I have to be stuck at 3 Mbps, there's no way those F'ers are going to keep getting the premium they are charging me for Ultra.

i believe comcast is way more expensive, my dad wanted to switch to comcast after seeing last months bill but it was like 100$ a month for thme with the set up we have now. so it would be pointless. if we only pay 78$ a month with 2.5 X the speed with that price locked till 2005.

Yeah, that's why I need to run some numbers.

No, not yet. With the holidays and year end coming up at work, things have been too busy lately. I probably won't get a chance to tinker until sometime after new year.

I'll definitely post whatever results I get (haven't I been bellyaching all along anyway?).

Don't feel bad Goober, I just switched to Ultra tonight, and I'm also not able to sustain over 3.3mbs. I can peak at 4.3, but not run constantly at it.

Gonna try later during non-peak times and see what happens.

well, after 11pm I can run at 4mbs.

There may be a chance it's this clunky old PC, but I doubt it. Line quality tests were horrid tonight.

No biggie, it would be nice to download at 450k, but I can live with 390 .

I just figured out my problem!!

Zone Alarm!

Kill ZA off, and wham! Running flat out.

Maybe time to upgrade, but 2.6 has always been great. I tried 3.0 and it was a pig. Maybe time to spring for that upgrade to 4.5.

geesh dweeb, 4.6 that is insane! that fastest i've been testing lately is like 4.3 which is still good, but your right at the cap, awesome!

Technically he is over the cap, which is not uncommon with the java based tests. Our modems on the Ultra service is 4.3Mbps and some change, so your tests are right at the caps while his are over. My modem shows tests doing the same thing, but real world tests show that the actual speed is 4.3Mbps. None the less, its still faster than some competitors.

I don't run ZA, but I have Norton's. Disabling that didn't do squat for me. I'm going to have to take some serious time and slog through some organized troubleshooting.

what internet browser are u running... i 95% of the time user Opera to browse the net because of features it has, such as pop-up blocker, but anywho it shows lower speeds than what they really are.

So if you are using a dif browser try just using IE, but im sure u are using IE anyways, just a thought

Yep, I'm on IE. If you're getting the higher speeds, I'm thinking it's got to be my system or its configuration. One of the things I'm going to do is try popping in a new NIC instead of using the on-board one.

By the way, roughly, where are you located? I'm in Buttonwood (the area with the traffic circles) in the court across from the park there. Basically .5 miles southeast of the police station there on Aurora Ave.

Im not sure if you know where this is, but im off of Iriquios and Ogden, right where the odgen mall k-mart is and right by arrowhead park and such places.

Not sure if that helped, but perhaps it did
