| compress movie from cable tv?
I was wondering,by hooking up my canon digital camcorder to the cable box, recording a movie to mini dv, is it possible to compress it small enough to fit it on a dvd-r? i have a g4, using os9 and working with imovie and quicktime pro.however , im not familiar with the different compression choices given. ive tried a few. the problem is it takes forever to achieve results.no luck so far. has anyone tried this? any and all help appreciated. 1 edit | Well...a DVD-R hold about 4.3 Gig.....DV is a Gig for every 5 minutes. You can get about 1:30 onto a DVD-R Disc from iMovie but it is heavily compressed by iMovie and iDVD during the preparation process. If the movie is 2 hours.....cut out about 30 minutes of commercials....if there are any....you might be able to get it on there....1;30 is all that iDVD can fit to one disc AFAIK....I have not used the latest iteration of iDVD...I think time is the key, not movie size as far as compression is concerned. Once you step over the 60 minute mark, iDVD compresses the crap out of it. If it is a really cool movie and you don't want to try to cut the crap out of it to fit...split it to 2 discs....they are cheap enough now....
I assume the G4 is not close enough to the TV or Cable box to forego the recording to the tape....? -- M$ is to OSes what AOL is to Internet Access. -leXicon5 |

does the Mac have a built-in DVD-R or did you purchase an external burner? -- M$ is to OSes what AOL is to Internet Access. -leXicon5 |

| reply to laury68 MPEG-4 gets better quality than MPEG-1 and may let you fit it on DVD. The catch is that MPEG-4 won't play on DVD players, you'd be stuck playing it on your computer. At least until MPEG-4 DVD players come out. Also there's no simple software to do it, it would be multiple steps. |
