Update: Field test and progress.

Last week we installed the pole. Getting the request for electricity was a little more demanding than anticipated. Hydro Quebec was not accepting the request from us directly, it needed to come from a certified electrician. We went to our electrician, and he could not put a request for us without a civic address! To make a lengthening story short, we now have a civic number for the pole.

We ended up purchasing a box, we got a deal on an outdoor silo controller box.

The cable company confirmed that they will be able to provide cable internet to that pole. Their cost is estimated at $3,000 but would be absorbed by them 100% with a 3 year contract. Of course we will make sure that in that contract, we will be able to move the connection closer should the cable eventually run directly to the business.

We field tested our D-Link 900AP+ and the 14dbi antennas on the property. Distance of final installation is estimated at 600 meters. The property of the business had a line of sight at 800 meters. We successfully connected and had a steady connection. At this point I do not have any means of measuring the throughput of the connection.

Cable company will be providing a 3.5M unlimited service. As long as the bridge can hold a constant speed of 5.5, we will be fine.

Because the modem and D-Link will be in a remote location (on the pole) about 8 feet up, and no real road access, resetting the equipment may prove to be problematic. I am considering putting the modem and D-Link on a timer that would turn of at midnight for say 2 minutes. This service will be used for business and their will be no need for night access. Any thoughts?

I can't comment on the Cable Modem, but I have 2 DWL-900AP+ units installed in the field in simple "rainproof" electrical boxes. Both are on the top of flat roofed buildings with no real shelter beyond the steel box itself. They've been rock-solid for a few months now, and we don't do any sort of tricks to keep them alive. Winter is coming up, so I don't know how they will fare in the colder weather, but in my experience, electronics like cold, right?
