Re: [wireless] BEFW11S4 v4, Firmware 1.5, constant lockups

To all,
This from Linksys. They are accepting notes to their support group (support@linksys.com) for those who would like to WPA support (and I suppose latest other updates) for the V3 BEFSW11S4. Like everyone else with the intermittent problems I tried everything and nothing resolved the issue with the V4. I had several Linksys techs working this as well. I would have to agree that I think that this is a hardware problem. I repeated this before, but Linksys tech support told me to RMA my V4 for a V3 to get the stability I wanted. I did, and haven't had a single connection loss, haven't had to pull the plug to get back into the setup, etc., etc. Do I like not having some of the options that apparently are and might be available for only the V4, no I don't. However, I don't want a router that just decides to stop functioning on its own. With no parameter changes that would make it any different than the V4, the V3 has been flawless. If you own a V3, I would write Linksys support, and request an updated firmware to get WPS functionality. Again, I was told to write support by the phone support group.

Well, the problem with the older firmware is that it keeps ARPing for no reason as we have seen in the Cox forum...so what to do - piss my ISP off by ARPing all the time or get pissed off by the damn router locking up on me. I can't take the router back because I bought it from Staples down in Carolina about a month ago.

Jason,
The only way Linksys is EVER going to do anything about the V4, is if enough people call in, let them know, RMA it, etc...

Update on 1.5 upgrade. IT sucks just like it does for everyone else. 3 lockups within less than a day. Had to power off and back on to get it working again. Downgraded to 1.45.3 and it stayed up overnight. I'm taking it back. I need stability more than I need wireless.

winkmj,
If you don't need WPA, you can RMA the V4 for a V3, which is as solid as a rock, write Linksys support, telling them you want WPA support for the V3. I have not had a single hiccup with the V3... The more techs I talk to at Linksys, the more I get the picture that they are fed up with fielding these issues on the V4 as well.

I bought the BEFW11S4 V4 recently and flashed it v1.50. So far I haven't had any problems. I have the wireless turned off because I don't have any wireless cards yet. Are the problems occuring more while wireless devices are being used?

I will post my settings later on as Biker45 asked me. I have a few things to do today before I get the chance to do this.

OK, I saved all the settings in HTML format and uploaded it to my server. You can go though the seeting the same way you would on the router. Just don't hit the Save Settings buttons. It might change your router.

Check out this thread

I have also read about Motorola TA's (VoIp) when used as a router - locking up nightly...

I wish my ISP had a clue??

More info from a post from someone representing themselves as an engineer for Cox Cable:

Linksys Wireless devices Arp Issues
We have had arp issues caused by Linksys wireless devices on our network which has affected a lot of the modems on the network. Please upgrade to the latest firmware for these wireless devices especially for the BEFW11S4v4 wireless router by going to the linksys website »www.linksys.com/support/cox/firmware.asp

RonS: thanks for posting your configuration.

My BEFW11S4 v4 running firmware 1.50 crashes once or twice a day. I compared my configuration with yours. Here's the differences. I'd welcome comments from anyone on what parameters might be causing my router to hang.

RonS stated that he has turned wireless off. I have wireless enabled, but my wireless PC is not often used. The vast majority of the hangs I get occur while the wireless PC is powered off (and my wired PC is on).

RonS has security turned off (no WEP, no WPA). I am using WEP. If enabling WEP is the cause of the hangs, then I have a Linksys router that I'll be selling cheap!

RonS is not using any MAC filtering. I have a MAC filter enabled for my wireless PC (only that MAC is allowed in my network).

RonS is not filtering any ports. I am filtering 135 - 139.

RonS has filter multicast disabled, I have it enabled.

RonS has PPTP passthru enabled, I have it disabled.

RonS does not have any port forwarding, I forward 113 to a non-existent IP address on my network (so the port does not show up on an intrusion scan).

RonS has his MTU set to 1400. I tried 1400, but that did not stop the frequent hangs. So, I set my MTU back to "disable" which defaults to 1500.

RonS has logging disabled. I tried disabling logging, but my hang problems continued, so I have enabled logging again.

RonS has his DHCP client lease time set to 0, which defaults to one day. I had my client lease time set to 0 (and my router was hanging). I have changed my client lease time to 32767 to see if that would help. It did not (router is still hanging).

The differences between my config and RonS' do not appear to be very significant, but I am open to any suggestions.

RonS: Is your BEFW11S4 v4 still running solid with no hangs?? Wanna trade

I downloaded the file and did a binary compare with the standard firmware 1.50 file .... The two files are identical. Whatever the Cox problem is, they are just recommending that people install firmware 1.50 (below is the result of my comparison ... code.bin is the standard 1.50 firmware and cox_code.bin is the file I downloaded from the link you provided) ...

D:\>fc /b code.bin cox_code.bin
Comparing files code.bin and COX_CODE.BIN
FC: no differences encountered

No problem, I am just trying to help see if there is some sort of pattern in all these problems.

Why do you have ports 135-139 filtered?

Do I have anything to gain by changing filter multicast to enabled, PPTP passthru to disabled?

Is it a good idea to forward port 113 to a non-existent IP address on my network?

I did have my MTU set to 1500 for a few days and then set it back down to 1400 after reading a few people talk about Roadrunner Cable working better at 1400.

I read up about ports 135-139 and filtered them and then forwarded 113 to a non-existent IP on the network. I also changed filter multicast to enabled and PPTP passthru to disabled

So far so good.

In about two weeks I will be getting wireless cards for a PC and a laptop and I will see how it goes then.

RonS: Before you buy your wireless cards, and if you are interested in WPA, have a look at my post re the lack of WPA support for the WUSB11 v2.8 ...

»No more firmware updates for BEFW11S4 ver 2/3?

After filtering 135 to 139, forwarding 113 to non-existent address, enabling the multicast filter, and disabling PPTP passthru, please keep us posted as to the stability of your BEFW11S4 v4.

The cards I am looking into are the TEW-226PC and the TEW-228PI cards from Trendent. They have a rebate going on with the cards and the customer reviews I have seen on them are very positive. I will be using WEP when I set them up.

I have been following that thread. Hopefully threads like that will help me at work when the copiers/printers start going wireless.

Well..it has been 3.5 hours since I made the changes and everything is still OK. I really hope I am one of the lucky ones and got a good v4.

Re: [wireless] BEFW11S4 v4, Firmware 1.5, constant

Well, I tried the hard reset as outlined in this thread. I'm still losing my Internet connection every couple of days, which is what was happening before I did the reset.

We Want ... A Shrubbery: I wish I had a solution for you, but unfortunately many other BEFW11S4 v4 owners are having the same problem, and so far we have not been able to find a solution. Check out the "Common Router Problems" topic for more discussion.
