| [DW6000] Terminal Services and DW6000
I am currently experimenting with the DW6000 to see if it can start replacing my current 4000 systems. Yes we had the upload issues (1Kb/s or less) but since it was moved from G3C to G11 it is running really well (77Kb/s - 105 Kb/s FTP uploads).
DW6000 Business Basic, Static IP, G11, 990 MHz. USRobotics Broadband router. Compaq Server running Win2K Server.
If I try to access the server behind the modem via terminal services I can log onto the the desktop of the server but the moment I attempt even clicking on the start button, the CPU usage ramps up to 100% and stays there. The only way to restore the server operation is to hard boot the system.
I have removed the router and connected the server directly to the DW6000 but still get the same results.
DW4000 Business Basic, static IP, Galaxy G11 1350. Celeron 900 Win98SE Direcway 4.0.3.9 Svc Pack C running Sygate Office Network as a software router.
Using a 4000 with Sygate Office Network, I can terminal service into the server and perform any operation on the desktop without the server missing a beat.
Has anyone seen anything like this? This has me baffled and could mean the end of any upgrade plans for the future.
As always, any help would be greatly appreciated.

| Apologies for suggesting the obvious:
- Could you have taskmgr running before this happens and perhaps get a look at what service/process has run away? - Anything in the event log? - Do you have it up to latest SP4 and patches?
Just to make sure I understand, the satellite system is at the server end and not the client attempting the connection? Also, is the ts client on the LAN with the server or are they hitting the server from remote? -- Bragging: DirecWay SRS BE Satmex5 117 1250 MHz, v4.2.1, Via EPIA Mini-ITX 533 MHz 512MB, Win2k Server SP4, WinRoute Pro, Red Hat Linux, Mozilla browser, OpenOffice.org; terrific wife & kids, live on a farm by Big Creek. |

| reply to peve No apologies needed!
- I have a monitor on the server and started taskmgr before attempting another remote connection. The System process is using 99% of the cpu time - No red flags in the event viewer - Due to our propietary software (which is not running at the time of the test) I cannot go higher than Svc Pack 2. Don't ask
Yes the satellite is at the server end. A lan client can ts in and run our software just fine, system runs normally. It's when I attempt to access the server from a remote computer that the system goes south

| reply to peve So it works ok with:
server - switch/hub - DW4000 - Inet - ts client
But not:
server - switch/hub - router - DW6000 - Inet - ts client
Could you try putting the router in with the DW4000 and attempt to isolate it to either the router or the DW6000?
I'm first suspecting the router since it is "closer". Could you swap it with a LinkSys/NetGear/D-Link router and try again? -- Bragging: DirecWay SRS BE Satmex5 117 1250 MHz, v4.2.1, Via EPIA Mini-ITX 533 MHz 512MB, Win2k Server SP4, WinRoute Pro, Red Hat Linux, Mozilla browser, OpenOffice.org; terrific wife & kids, live on a farm by Big Creek. |

| reply to peve I have not tried the router after the 4000 system, might be worth trying.
I did replace my Linksys with a USRobotics router on the 6000 and then I connected the server directly to the 6000 modem to try and eliminate the routers themselves.
Could it be something to do with the fact that the 6000 has 2 public IP addresses? Grasping at straws here

VNC works through the DW6000.....but TS is still screwing things up.

I don't have any better plan
Only a couple more thoughts to offer at the moment:
- I think it is time to dig the heels in real hard about your "don't ask, don't tell" proprietary software and inability to upgrade past SP2. The later SPs and patches involve some really critical security issues. And there are lots of bugfixes related to TS in each of the SPs. Whether this will fix the problem I dont' know.
- Has all the applicaton software been installed with the TS in "software install" mode? Seems I recall such a symptom when I once forgot to switch modes before an install. But memory is far from clear.
- I would recommend you double-check the port forwarding setup and make sure it has the right ports and protocols. (I'm just trying to think of what might be intrinsically different between the DW4 and DW6). Also, a double-check of all IP setups.
This is truly a strange problem (likely with a simple solution, once found). -- Bragging: DirecWay SRS BE Satmex5 117 1250 MHz, v4.2.1, Via EPIA Mini-ITX 533 MHz 512MB, Win2k Server SP4, WinRoute Pro, Red Hat Linux, Mozilla browser, OpenOffice.org; terrific wife & kids, live on a farm by Big Creek. |

| reply to peve Thank you for all the input and suggestions !
Port forwarding checked and double checked and matches the DW 4000 system (sigh). VNC works and will look at radmin but not the best choices.
About the services packs, been there and had the fight hence my unwillingness to talk more about it. They are aware of the situation and the potential security risks but my place is with my dishes
Continuing to work through other sources to see if I can solve this one.
I will be sure to post the final results.
Thanks again,

| PV, You didn't say anywhere about a firewall - I assume you have one in the system somewhere? Maybe a ISA server?
**On a side note for all you TS users out there - download the XP remote desktop protocol client (msrdpcli.exe). It works way better than the standard TS client. It will run on anything above W98. -- DRS 4.0.39 W2k Small Business Server 3 clients DNS G11 990 |

| reply to peve The only firewall on the system is the Broadband router/firewall with port 3389 routed to the server address.
Installed SP4 and all patches last night and it makes no difference, same problem with TS.
I have identified Thread 56 within the system process to be the thread taking all the processor time. How to interpret this is unkown to me at this point.
The remote workstation (mine) is running remote desktop protocol client.
