Anything that worries the cable industry . . .

is probably ultimately a good thing for the consumer.

The cable industry has had things their way for far too long. They've built up relationships, via their lobbying efforts, with our elected officials (from the local to the federal level) to the detrimate (measured by the higher and higher cable bills) of the consumer trapped into local long-term franchise agreements that for years have given the cable companies an unfair advantage.

What the cable companies are now crying "unfair advantage" is just a leveling of the playing field.

This was posted in the OOL forum a couple hours ago. On this particular system. the fees for the digital cable boxes and the analog cable boxes is going up to almost as much as DirecTV's receiver charges.

The press release that they issued a couple weeks ago was misleading. It said that TV packages would be going up 2 or 3 dollars more a month. But when you get done adding up all the other charges (that are also increasing in price), the increase is a lot more!

God bless DirecTV!

So the add'l receiver access charges (even though you own the DTV receiver) are still more than OOL's receiver rental fees?

How does this level the playing field? By the Fox programming being able to gouge cable distributors...and thus their customers more? That helps consumers? Maybe I'm missing something here.

I don't care who it is, DTV or Comcast (as we see with their screwing with TechTV)...when they own their own programming it frees them to screw over everyone else. Consumers are hardly the winners.

Cablevisions receiver fees are lower than DirecTV's. But not by a few dollars like they used to be. They are almost on the same page now.

As far as Rupert is concerned about gauging customers.... Comcast is with-holding is CSN-Philly from DirecTV. So if DirecTV owns a channel, they should be well within their rights to with-hold it from Comcast.

The Cable Companies really shouldn't be complaining about DirecTV owning content and the delivery system. The Cable Companies already own both, and have no justification in my opinion to complain.

The Cable Companies are gauging customers already. Rupert with-holding channels from them isn't going to make the prices go down. They will ALWAYS be going up, regardless of if Rupert raises one of his channels prices 50% a year. If Cable were to create a package for ESPN and all the other expensive channels, that would be ON TOP OF what you already pay. I would be very surprised if they lowered the bills when they put the channels on an a la carte tier. They would put the channels on a premium tier, prices would remain the same, AND you would be paying for the additional tier.

My point is, neither (cable or DBS distributors) should be owning the content providers. As for your latter comments...that's exact point I made today regarding Comcast and TechTV »Re: [COMCAST] Not enough bandwidth for TechTV . They created a new $4 tier of worthless channels but didn't lower the regular prices.

Fox owning DTV will just make it worse for consumers as a whole, not better.

But it also makes worth noting that while DTV and DN customers tout their limited price increases, I do notice that only now is cable's top tier programming and per outlet (access/rental charges) reaching the same price levels as those of DBS ($80 range).

Great news about DTV and additional receivers! If you have a phone line connected to all your receivers, DTV will now not charge anything I.E. $4.99 month, for the additional receivers! So the Total Choice Premier for $87.99 a month gives you access to 225 digital channels, and thats the real deal!!! Be afraid cable companies be very afraid!

Says who? Where didja hear that? I just looked again at their TOS and it's in there. If they aren't connected to the phone lines, says the TOS then they all have to be on separate accounts. If they are connected to the same phone line then they can mirror the account for $5 per receiver.

(1.f) Additional Receivers. If you add additional receivers to your account, you may purchase a separate subscription for each one. Or, if all your receivers are continuously connected to the same land-based phone line, we can "mirror" the programming from your primary receiver to your additional receivers and charge you only the additional receiver fee amount described in Section 2. Pay per view programming cannot be mirrored and can be viewed only on the receiver for which it is purchased.

(3) Additional Receiver Authorization Fee: If you meet the qualifications described in Section 1(f), we may charge you a monthly fee of up to $4.99 for each additional receiver, rather than a full subscription fee on each additional receiver. This reduced rate is available only if all receivers are located at your residence and are continuously connected to the same land-based telephone line. If not, you will be responsible for the full amount of our programming charges for each receiver.

He works for COX!!! And beleieve me, they are afraid of DirecTV and BellSouth bundling, selling and all those other things, As a note, apples to apples in New Orleans DirecTV is about $20 a month cheaper than COX!
