I like it. Anything that helps you navigate back to the forum or your Fav Forums quicker is GREAT in my book.

We don't need stars or avatars, either. This one should be quite useful, actually.

I actually like this one. Saves me the trouble of scrolling back up or down.
Would be better if it went to your favorite forums..

I thought, "Hey, maybe this is the way to get back "in-context" when a search or a link gets you stuck on a single post with no way to return to the thread surrounding the post."

But it's not. It always goes to the forum view as of today, no matter how many years old the post that you clicked from was.

Yaa, Weirdal!

I came here to say I liked the new little help feature, and was surprised when I saw your thread. You'll get used to it, and I bet you wind up liking it in a couple of days!

Re: I dont like this one

Here is a link to a single out of context post from a topic

»Re: snort stops logging, but process still going?

what is difficult about getting back "in-context" from that page?

what kind of link generates a post where you cannot get back in-context?

That's a great example, because once I get there I can only go to the preceding thread or the following thread; I can't go "in context" like we used to be able to, a page at a time, by using the numbered page buttons at the bottom.

When you click a link to a post, like the "Reply" link in IMs that you developed at my request, or a link returned from a search, you get just that one thread. There is no way to see the surrounding "temporal" threads.

Now if the above examples of links took you to the same contextual view that the "chevron" (">>") does, it would be perfect

Unless ou are seeing something different than me, when you look at the top of the page, you'll see a link AFTER the forum name...

Forums » OS and Software » All things UNIX » snort stops logging, but process still going?

(the last one)

that link is the the entire topic. And yes i tried while logged out and the link still shows.

Right. That link, however, goes to the first post of the thread, not necessarily the context of the post we are coming from. I know it's picky, but on a 12-page thread where you want to see the context of a post on page 11 that you got to by clicking a link, the format of the URL that is used in the "chevron" feature is perfect, in that it puts you right on the page with the referenced post in front of you.

Try copying and pasting a chevron link into the address bar and you'll see what I mean. Now compare with the link from, for example, one of the returned items of a search.

the chevron link is no good, because it is a # link, and only useful if the number of posts per page, and the start-at post, means that it can find the post in a given slice of the topic. I'm not going to waste server time on constructing a pagination list with a yellow highlight indicator (means fetching the ENTIRE topic and sorting it, and finding where this post fits in) just on the off chance the viewer might click there.

I fear that until i win a lottery and buy a couple more 64bit mysql servers, you are just going to have to put up with clicking on the topic, then if it has more than 1 page (rare - especially if you set your PPP higher than default), clicking next page a couple of times.

Not everyone is familiar with the technical requirements that surround the requests they might have.

We do appreciate the consideration that you give the requests.

The sarcasm however, I am not so sure about...

It isn't sarcasm, I'm being entirely straight forward. Some things that people think are very compute intensive, are very easy, and vice versa.

The posts database, all of it, is online, and open to anyone. The indexes to this database and how they are used, are the single largest factor in overall site performance.

One 64bit mysql server *is* on order, it will cost over 10 grand ("your tool points at work"), and is needed now.
