| Terayon TJ210 question
What exactly does it mean when the "cable" and "test" lights of the modem are blinking rapidly for 3+ minutes before the modem will sync?
Also, is it true that getting your modem switched is something that is at the discretion of the field tech who comes and does the service call? |

Can we see your signal levels? That would me guess, as depending on what lights are blinking, it usually indicates that the modem is trying to find a downstream and upstream path.

No necessarily. You can take the modem to your local office and ask if you can trade for something else. Are you having trouble with yours? I guess you might be, but it could also be your signal levels.
Edit: Check out THIS THREAD. -- Adam... Uh, someone broke the internet again! |

| reply to adambpsu Adam, is there any way to check the signal levels of the TJ210?
It doesnt have an internal webpage that I know of, and I havent been able to get that docdiag utility to work.
The tech came out yesterday and said I had low signal levels and that is why my connection was slow. According to him, he fixed that at the main amplifier feed, or something to that effect. He didnt really say all the much when I was asking questions other than I had low signal.
I called them back that night because they didnt bring out another modem, and the lady I spoke with said that was as the discretion of the field tech, which I thought was kinda odd.
They setup another appointment for Monday. Maybe I'm wrong, but I dont think it should be that big of a deal to get it exchanged for another one since we pay a rental fee every month of $3. |

| reply to Exceles That's what we have field techs and tech support for. However, understandably, there are going to be a few subscribers out there who have a decent understanding of the way broadband works, and are able to troubleshoot on their own. That being said, most customers do not have access to the information and resources necessary to make a proper decision based on the conditions at the subscribers home. |

| reply to Exceles Alright, I've gone to the local office and switched modems. New modem is a Terayon TJ615 (I was hoping they had a Motorola or something). Seems to be working worthwhile, and it speeds that I was expecting are back to normal.
It appears that my friends were right, I did need a new modem.
Just having trouble getting and keeping an IP on it, but as long as I can stay connected until the tech gets here Monday everything is good to go.
This model has the internal page, which I like. |

Even though the techs are coming, if you still want to post your signal levels, feel free too. I was looking for a way to access your olds modem's info, but I couldn't find a thing. -- Adam...Uh, someone broke the internet again! |

| reply to Exceles yeah. the old modem didnt have an internal config The only trouble I'm having now is trying to get on the internal config page to the Event log and Status page, but that is it.
This is the speed test that I just did: »/speedtests/30···70658090
And here are my signal levels: Tx Power 3.2 dBmV Rx Power -20.6 dBmV Downstream SNR 22.2 dB Tx Frequency 0 Hz Rx Frequency 591000000 Hz
If you would like the MAC ID, I'll PM it to you if you wish |

Your signals do not look so good. |

Do you mean the modem loses sync, lights start flashing or are you losing the IP on the computer? |

| reply to Exceles First I had the router connected to it, but it wouldnt get an IP.
Then I connected the laptop to it, still no IP.
Finally I connected it to the desktop, and it pulls an IP in the range of 67.*.*.* something.
I get it working, then switch it to the router after I made the post and it seems to be working ok now...
Speeds are up and alot better then with that TJ210. Either that modem was tired of dealing with the crappy signal, or it had just been through its service life :\
The cable is split outside about....atleast 5 times with 2 and 3-way splitters to give the house 9 outlets on 3 levels(2 in the basement, 4 on the main level, and 3 upstairs), only 3 of which are used (2 TVs and the modem, modem on main level). The house was wired this way when my parents purchased it.
I might move the modem back to the basement if I can convince my mother to let me run Cat5e all over the place so I can have the modem in the basement, with the WAN link from it to the wireless router on the main level. |

| WOW...those are the worst signal levels I have ever seen!
You need to have your cable modem come off the first split so it doesn't lose as much signal. All splitters are made to lose a certain amount of singal on them, they are marked "-3dB" on them which means you lose 3dB of signal going through that splitter.
Considering your modem goes through at least 5 splits of approximately 3-5 dB signal loss, I'm not suprised you have a downstream signal of -20dB! I also can't believe your modem can sync under those conditions...lol -- - Steve Bularca |

| reply to Exceles I would check a few more times on those signal levels, maybe even a call in to tech support. If all seems well right now and it runs well overnight and tomorrow then you may not have an issue, if the tech still comes to the house, you may be charged for the service call if he finds nothing wrong. |

| ahem...20dB Rx and 2dB Tx is WAY out of the appropriate limits...and he already said he has a problem getting an IP, maybe because his singal is so bad that he can't talk to the DHCP server? sounds like a problem to me. -- - Steve Bularca |

I'll see what I can do to get the modem on the first split.
if push comes to shove, I'll go outside and by trial and error get the modem line on the first split. |

A few other tests showed different, which is why I said what I did. And in his post,
quote: First I had the router connected to it, but it wouldnt get an IP.

I am just trying to narrow down the issue here, speed tests look good, and I too was wondering how he was maintaining a connection with the signals that he posted. I am curious as to how much it is dropping the connection. Let us know what the tech says. |
