westell 2200 with netgear router

Last Friday I switched from a cable modem (getting slow) to Verizon DSL (just became available in my area). The cable modem was conected to a netgear wgr614 router which worked perfectly. especially the firewall (zero "events" since it was installed) so i'd like to keep using it. my DSL kit included a westell 2200 modem (A90-220015-04 rev. M, firmware 01.06.53). I have been trying all the proceedures from this and other forums and still cannot get online with the modem and router connected together. I have tried setting the westell in bridged, routed bridge and proxy bridge with dhcp on and off in each mode. With the router connected I can open the configuation page of the westell. I got the isp and dns server addresses and was able to ping all of them. I'm connected all the way through, but apparently my packets are being blocked. I've set the router speeds to 10mbps and 100 mbps and auto. I've also tried entering the domain name (verizon.net) and logon settings. I must have turned things on and off and restarted my pc 100 times over Sat. and Sun. I wouldn't mind burning the weekend if I could get it to work! I'm offering a case of beer to anyone who can help me to get this to work.

I'm having a similar problem with the 2200 and my linksys router. In the 2200 I've turned off PPPoE, and I've set it to bridge mode. I have my linksys router set to do the PPPoE logon, and I can get connected to the internet. However I have one tiny problem: with this setup I can no longer reach the 2200's config pages (192.168.1.1). Is there some way I can tell my router to let me reach this address?

The modem only answers to addresses in the same subnet it's in. It's a modem operational obstacle, not really a LinkSys setting/problem.

I use a second, parallel, router to get to mine. In a pinch you can setup the LinkSys WAN to temporarily access the modem but in that setting you're not on the net.

 Once you put the 2200 in pure bridge mode by turning off DHCP, DNS and setting VC1 to bridge mode, it no longer responds to its internal address, AFAIK. The only way to get it to respond to that again is to use a paper clip and restore it to its original settings.

I currently use a 2200 and a Zywall 10-II router and I got the 2200 from Ebay as VOL is not yet shipping them to ex-GTE areas yet. I wanted to see if it would improve anything on my loop in the way of bridge taps and such but only saw a 5% increase at most, if that. I did not have to pay much for it though and I was able to retire my old B-90 to a backup position.

Except it does respond just fine. Set your Z10-II to the subnet the 2200 was last seen in (maybe the Z10-II can even create that WAN connection concurrently?).

I have a what I describe as a second "parallel router" with a WAN in the 2200's subnet. This router's only function in life is to access the modem - and I log the XCVR stats page hourly. I also need to add a ROUTE from my LAN box to use this second path to the modem.

The problem is that the Z10-II and the 2200 have the same ip address. So now if I type the ip in my browser, I get the router log on page. It took many, many tries to get the 2200 to stay in bridge mode so it would work with the router. Consequently, I am hesitant to reset the modem or do anything to change what is a working setup just so I can retrieve some stats from the modem although it would be nice.

Yep, sorry, I missed mentioning that detail - they do have to be at 2 different address spaces. My LAN is in 172.

Actually, you can access the 2200's internal configuration pages (192.168.1.1) if the modem is in bridge mode. The problem is that most routers won't normally "pass through" that IP address on the WAN port.

Okay, I could get in earlier to my Westell 2200 setup without problems, but after hitting the reset button a login screen comes up and I can't get past it. Any suggestions?

 tried your advice. set the westell to bridge, turned off dhcp and disabled dns. shut down pc, router, then westell. waited 30 seconds. powered on westell and waited for all green. turned on router and waited for all green. turned on pc, tried to connect and nothing! I know the westell works in this configuration because i disconnected the westell form the router and plugged it into the hub and got online with no problem. before i did that i went into the router settings and tried changing and applying settings one by one. first i went to basic settings and entered a domain name (verizon.net), then a login and password. then I went to wan setup disabled connect automatically, then the spi firewall. then i checked "respond to ping on internet port". then i tried all three settings of port speed 10M, 100M and auto. nothing worked. is there any hope of getting this to work?

 just found something in the wgr614 user manual.

Note: if your isp assigns a private WAN IP address (such as 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x), the dynamic DNS service will not work because private addresses will not be routed on the internet.

my server IP is 10.x.x.x. I also noticed that the DNS address boxes in the router settings are blank. Is there a workaround for this?

They're talking about the service "Dynamic DNS" (»dyndns.org ).
